Prague train stations location
 

I finally have figured out where the 2 Prague stations are. My question is we are staying in Old town, Hotel Bohemia. We can get a train to Vienna from either station. Can we walk from the hotel to Hl.n or is it too far? Because of what I have read about safety around Hl.n is it better to go the distance to Holesovice?

I wouldn't walk to the train station from there, that's quite a ways with baggage. It's really only about 1.5 km probably, but I wouldn't lug my bags that far. Besides, it's kind of across a big major highway (Wilsonova), that's another issue. I think you may not realize how big some of the streets and road around there are, if they are major thoroughfares, and the one next to the train station is. If you don't want to taxis a private car (and all hotels of that quality in Prague usually have arrangements with a driver you can trust), the metro goes right there, although you'd have to transfer lines once at Florenc, I think. That hotel is very near Namesti republicky metro stop.

I don't know what safety issues would be any different going all the way across the river to a different train station. I've used both and they're just train stations to me. Holesovice is just farther away so you'd probably pay more to get there. I didn't think most trains stopped at both stations, but I might be wrong on that as I've only left going south from the main one, as I recall.

We arrived at the station nearer the historic center where
our hotel was located. It was definitely not a walk and the streets were very crowded. The taxi had to ease its
way through all the people. Be careful about taking a taxi from the station because all of the ones there tried to seriously overcharge us. We walked out and down the street to get a taxi. Check with your hotel and find out what your taxi fare should be so you will know what is fair. You will want
to get out of the rail station asap because it is not a good environment.

trams are cheap and easy

Hlavni is very central, a short walk from all the sights in the old town. Holesovice is absolutely miles away on the edge of the city, a metro or taxi ride.

So it's a no-brainer, walk to Hlavni, the only sensible decision.

There are NO safety concerns whatsoever about walking to Hlavni, or in Hlavni, any more than walking down the road anywhere in central Prague. What on Earth have you been reading?

We walked from the train station to our hotel with roll around bags. The taxi driver who stopped to see if we needed his service as we were walking just told us we were a only another block and a half away. I never felt unsafe in Prague. And, as bilboburgler said and we quickly discovered, trams are readily available and cheap.

Thanks again for all your replies. It's so great being able to get advice from someone who has been there. I appreciate it and think this is my last question for Prague so now on to bother the Dresden people. that is, unless I come up with something else before we leave!
