Prague to Rothenburg

We are planning a trip to Germany in May. We will be landing in Munchen, and want to drive to Prague. We also want, at some point, to visit Rothenburg and Dinkelsbuhl.

How are the roads from Prague to Rothenburg/Romantische Strasse area? Is this a reasonable route to plan, or are we better off to go back toward Munchen?

Thank you...

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is much closer to Munich than Prague, but, yes, it is on the opposite side. Which route you'll want to take from Prague to Rothenburg depends on which of the many not-to-be-missed targets you will select to look at on the way - use www.viamichelin.com to figure it out.

When you rent your car, tell them that you're taking it into the Czech Republic, it may affect your contract and insurance etc. And at the border make sure you get the road-tax sticker for the Czech Republic, otherwise on the way out they'll fine you and you'll be so cranky...

If you drive expressways in Austria, you need the Austrian equivalent sticker - ditto in Switzerland, but not in Germany.

Two places you should swing by and look at between Munich and Prague (well, many more, but let's just stick to these two): Passau and Ceske Krumlov - google them and see for yourself.

On the way back stop in Plzen, home of the real and original Pilsner. Then if you stick to the E50 heading west you'll get to Nürnberg on the way to Rothenburg.

Hi lB,

You will also need an International Driver's Permit in Austria.
