Thanks dugi_otok for the suggestions. You’ve definitely helped. I’m still undecided on Prague vs Salzburg. Each is about equidistant from Frankfurt.
Option One:
Day 1 – Frankfurt to Prague 5hrs 41min 513km
Day 3 – Prague to Lake Bled 6hrs 12 min 614km
Day 5 – Lake Bled to Plitvice Lake 3hrs 22min 324km
Option Two:
Day 1 – Frankfurt to Salzburg 5hrs 39min 536km
Day 3 – Salzburg to Ljubljana 2hrs 54min 278km
Day 5 – Ljubljana to Plitvice Lake 2hrs 53min 269km
Option Two allows me to spend time at Lake Bled on the way to Ljublajana and certainly gives us more time in the Lake Bled / Ljubljana area. But I’d really like to see Prague and don’t really mind the 6 hour drive, so I’ll continue thinking about it.
I really like your Plitvice to Mostar through Bosnia-H suggestion for Day 7.
You’ve also given me food for thought about my return to Frankfurt route. Your suggestion to overnight in or around Berchtesgaden has me retracing a portion of road I’ve already traveled on this trip and taking me through Munich. We’ve been to Rothenburg several times now, and I’ve been very disappointed with how “touristy” it’s become. So I’m now thinking we spend an extra day in Bosnia and return this way:
Day 20 – Rovinj to in or near Innsbruck 6hrs 7min 455km
Day 21 – Innsbruck to Frankfurt via Augsburg, Rothenburg and Wurtzburg 6hrs 45min 558km
Granted that’s two longish days, but we won’t be spending any time touring cities, etc., and still puts us at the airport the night before we fly home.
Thanks for the links, especially the Rick Steves links, I did not know about them.
My thought is to just wander the coast from Dubrovnik to Rovinj, spending more time in places we like and fewer in places we like less while keeping in mind when we need to be in Rovinj and any “must visit” sites along the way.
Do you think it will be a problem traveling in Croatia in June without lodging reservations?
I really, really appreciate your comments and suggestions. You have been most helpful.

I just read the fine print in my Europcar rental agreement:
b. In the countries Albania . . . Turkey and all the others of Yugoslavia’s successor states (apart from Slovenia and Croatia) and the USSR, the use is prohibited. It seems the agent I spoke with was a bit lacking in Geography knowledge.
So travel into Bosnia-H and Montenegro is specifically prohibited. I guess Mostar and Herceg Novi are off the itinerary. Not sure how to legally drive to Dubrovnik without crossing that pesky 25 kilometer stretch.

That is why I asked the question earlier about the rental agreement. I did not realize that you had to pass through B-H to get to Dubrovnik until I got to the border crossing.I just bit the bullet and drove my Hertz German rented car across the not so pesky 25 kilometer stretch. It was uneventful and over as fast as a kid running through the sprinklers.Hertz would not even rent me a German made car to go to Croatia so they rented me a Honda. Who knew!If you really want to go to Mostar and/or Kotor you can take a tour from Dubrovnik. I went to Mostar on a previous trip,in the Yugoslavia days, even saw the original Mostar Stari Most (old bridge) with the kids jumping off.

Re: Prague vs. Salzburg. IMO, Salzburg makes a lot of sense for a visit of just a day or two. For Prague, I wanted MUCH more time. JMO.
And as for lodging, you might not have difficult finding lodging, but you might have to spend more money than you would want and more time to find a suitable place than if you book ahead. I went in late May / early June and was glad I had booked in advance. YMMV.
You can reach Mostar by public transportation.

OK, I’m convinced it’s Salzberg.
dugo_otoc, I’m thinking I might brave the pesky 25 kilometers also. And I’m guessing the Audi I thought I was renting will be a Skoda “or similar.’ As an alternative, has anyone taken the ferry from Trpanj to Ploce? It appears I could avoid B-H that way.
And “via Michelin” just sank in and I found the website. Amazing. I’ll never trust Google maps again. I’m rethinking my return trip now.
Again, thanks to all for the suggestions. They have been most helpful.

I've always rented through www.economycarrentals.com and never had a problem with taking the cars into BiH although I know some hire companies are against this. You will probably also find they do not allow you to take the car on ferries as well!
It is my understanding that the short stretch of BiH along the coastal road at Neum is a 'corridor' which has to be negotiated when travelling that route, and as such is permitted by rental companies provided you do not deviate off that road. This question is often asked on tripadvisor forums.
I've also taken the ferry Trpani-Ploce. It's fine, but make sure you get there in good time, particularly if you are taking the last ferry of the day - there seems to be priority given to local people travelling home, trucks etc. And they don't half pack the vehicles on tight! I was unable to get out of my car for several minutes, until they 'bumped' it over enough for me to squeeze out.

"OK, I’m convinced it’s Salzberg."
Salzburg
My experience is that www.economycarrentals.com has very high one-way fees, at least in Poland and Italy (but not in Turkey) compared to Autoeurope.com.

For car rental on my last trip to Europe I used Costco. I got a car from Avis, that Avis said was sold out on their website.

I bought the American Express insurance for about $18

You need an International Drivers Permit ( Translation of your drivers license) for driving in Austria and Slovenia. This might be needed when stopped by the Police. The car rental agency does not ask for it.
There is one problem I had with viamichelin. The Croatian motorway is completed to Ploce.

For some reason viamichelin Ploce to Dubrovnik routes you thru Bosnia and Montenegro 5h26 (278 km ). I do not think this is correct.

Hi,
Me and my wife are planning to do a road trip from Prague to Dubrovnik and back to Prague. And while researching on the topic I landed on this post. Therefore, thought of reach out to you to check how was your experience and what all things we should keep in mind while planning this trip.
Thanks,
Harsh
