Prague shown in films?

I am taking my nine-year-old daughter to Prague next week. We found that watching "Roman Holiday" in advance of a weekend in Rome was hugely helpful in knowing what we wanted to see, and I wondered if there are any child-friendly (not necessarily child-oriented, but safe to show a child) films that feature Prague? thanks! feel free to email me at [email protected], or post to the forum

I think there was a Vin Diesel (sp?) movie withing the last couple of years. Not sure how appropriate it is for a 9yr old though.

sandi_travelnut Apr 5th, 2006 07:08 AM

what about The Unbearable Lightness of Being?

The most recent movie out was Last Holiday. Also Everything is Illuminated with Eliajah Wood; the Prince & Me; Chasing Liberty (Mandy Moore); the beginning in the first Mission Impossible; and going back a few years, Amadeus. I think all of these movies would be appropriate for a child.

Best to watch "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" first to judge if it's suitable for your daughter. Ditto Mission Impossible.

Amadeus has lovely scenes of Prague but I don't remember the film rating.

Didn't you check your local library? Ours has several videos on Prague in its travel section.

I got sucked into Chasing Liberty...long cold sunday and nothing else was on.

Watch it first as who knows what your idea of appropriate for a 9 year old is. My guess...barring one or two small scenes, it may be OK. The Prague parts are in the beginning of the film.

The rest is Italy and Berlin.

Here's a list for you:

WAAAaaaa! it's snowing here!!!!

pmgoosed Apr 5th, 2006 09:00 AM

Are you in Boston...because it is snowing here too...and though I hate it....it gives us one more week in a dreadful snowboarding/ski season.

cigalechanta Apr 5th, 2006 09:10 AM

WAAAAaa!! mimosa stole my old name and line :)
It is snowing here in Boston, where are you?
The bourne Identity (which has been on tv alot lately) has scenes shot in Prague that are supposed to be Zurick.

pmgoosed Apr 5th, 2006 09:16 AM

Good call on Bourne Identity. The whole mission impossible movie was shot in Prague (it was actually a huge deal because after the filming, crazy boy Cruise accused the Prague officials of holding the film hostage on $$$ issues owed to teh city.

It has been snowing off and on in Boston for the last four hours. Just looked out the window....it is now drizzle.

I am in Chinatown...lovely digs of the BIG DIG offices.

It did, however, snow 9 inches in Killington...NICE!!!!!

Mimosa,

Thanks for the site, that's quite a list.

A friend in N.H. e-mailed that it was snowing and I thought she was kidding.

Cigale, I didn't know the Zurich scenes in "Bourne" were actually Prague. I have the dvd so will watch it closely next time. Thanks for the info.

luisah, none of us are geniuses. we google and read.
Here's where I have posted in previous years to help someone find location in a film;

seems Zurich scenes are never filmed in Zurich becasue of cost.

IN the cult indy, Run Lola Run, launching the career of our heroine in Bourne Identity, the famous bank and running scenes, allegedly in Zurich, were filmed less than a 1/4 of a mile from Check Point Charlie and about three blocks from Hitler's Bunker.

Intrepid1 Apr 6th, 2006 05:50 AM

I think you are mistaken about "Run, Lola Run" as that was supposed to BE in Berlin, not Zurich or am I worng.

If I am I'll dig it out and watch it again tonight. There is no way any of those scenes in that movie could have ever been passed off as being in Switzerland.

pmgoosed Apr 6th, 2006 05:52 AM

I could be wrong. Hmmmmm...need to call the movie buff friend who told me that fact.

No matter where it was supposed filmed, the German govt started ripping down that building last year.

What a great indy film though.

cigalechanta Apr 6th, 2006 08:23 AM

Run, Lola, Run was film entirely in Germany.

Kolya (very cute, stars a little boy)

Kafka (kind of spooky, though)

Doesn't Unbearable Lightness of Being have some hot sex scenes? (NOT for a little kid to see!!)

Amadeus is probably OK. Not too much adult content, etc.

Dvorak in Prague video of Yo Yo Ma concert

not a movie expert, but I don't think Cruise was in the Bourne Identity... I think it was Mission Impossible that pmsgoosed was referring to. I vaguely remember a problem with the government, but that was about 10 years ago.

There are some great shots of Prague in the beginning of MI tho!

cigalechanta Apr 6th, 2006 07:51 PM

PLEASE!!! It was Matt damon , not the rodent likr Cruise in the Bourne Identity.
