Prague or Barcelona?
 

Trying to figure out where to go on vacation. Prague or Barcelona? Hotels? Cheap? Central?

I haven't been to Barcelona, but Prague is one of my most favorite cities in the world. We found the people to be very friendly, the prices reasonable and the architecture of the buildings some of the most amazing we had ever seen. There are lots of wonderful areas to visit for day trips (or overnight) within short distance of Prague. We stayed at the Three Ostriches (U Tri Pstrosu) right next to the Charles Bridge. Very reasonable, wonderful people and great location.

I've been to both - and both in October. I found Barcelona a more festive city. However, I went to Prague last year after the floods so that probably contributed to the muted mood. I think you could probably find cheap central hotels in central Prague a bit easier than in central Barcelona. Barcelona has a definte mediterranian vibe - Prague is mysterious, moody.

You are more likely still to be in possession of your wallet after visitng Prague.

I am partial to Prague (been there 7 times), but I've heard good things about Barcelona, also (even from my Czech friends!). If you are into architecture, either city is fabulous. If you want great music/culture - go to Prague. You can see opera, symphonies, ballet, recitals... all in breathtaking concert halls for very reasonable prices. Look on some websites (www.travel.cz for instance), to get price ranges on hotels. You can eat well for $10 - $12 a meal (including beer, of course) in Prague. Have fun!

We love Spain but have not been to Barcelona, so I'm unable to give you a comparison.

We went to Prague in May and can't wait to return. It is a wonderful city for all the reasons other posters have given you and more. We were there for five days, before going to Vienna and Budapest, and hated to leave.

Just strolling around and admiring the architecture is a great way to spend some time. Lots of interesting things to do and see, and as noted above, music is everywhere and at reasonable prices. I don't think you will regret a Prague visit.

Have not been to Barcelona, but just got back from Prague--it is amazing. So much to see in it is all compacted into this small area of the city. We stayed at the U Krale Karla--it was great!

I have been to both and they are both wonderful. I agree that Barcelona is the moe festive city. It depends on when you are going. The weather in Barcelona will be better in the winter and autumn. Both have a wide variety of hotels in all price ranges. I think I would choose Barcelona!

I have been to both; it's a little bit like comparing and contrasting a Caesar salad with a Baked Alaska. Too many differences (and btw, neither city is meant to be represented by those two examples).

Barcelona for me, no doubt, and I've been to both, but it depends on what your tastes are. Good shopping in Barcelona, and even good food -- I believe that the Times magazine recently featured a Spanish chef near Barcelona that has three Michelin stars. Interesting Gaudi architecture, and you also have the cable cars and Montjuic (sp?).

iam not having a lot of luck finding hotels that are available in prague

AR- Prague has plenty of Gypsy pickpockets so you should watch your wallet there too.

I've been to both Prague and Barcelona and truly enjoyed both of them so you cannot go wrong in either. And October would be nice in either choice. I would say that I didn't love the food in Prague as it tended to be heavier. The old castles, churches, Jewish Quarter, musical events were wonderful in Prague. Loved the architercture, modern art, sunshine, and liveliness of Barcelona.

The shopping is better in Barcelona.
The beer is cheaper in Prague.
There's tapas in Barcelona.
There's the $3 full meal in Prague.
The Mediterranean is refreshing.
The Vtlava is romantic.
The Architecture is fascinating in both.
Barcelona is fun. Prague is magical.
