Prague opera attire

We will be attending an opera in Prague at the National Theatre and I'm wondering how formal the opera is there? Suits/tuxes for men, or slacks and a tie for my husband? Black skirt/dress with a nice black sweatter or a gown for me? How formal (or rather how INFORMAL) can we get. I'd rather not have to bring formal attire, but I don't want to look silly either.

Hi Bruingirl,

I saw some operas at the National Theatre in January and most people were dressed relatively smartly - a black skirt or dress with a nice black sweater should be fine. I didn't see anyone in black tie.

Have a wonderful time; what opera are you seeing?

When I went, I think I wore nice black pants and a simple beaded top and I felt appropriately dressed. Actually we went twice, and I can't remember what I wore the second time, but it was something in the same dressy informal vein. A gown isn't necessary. I think my boyfriend wore slacks and a tie, though suits might have been more common.

Formal attire (tux/gown) is not necessary. If you're in the better seats he should try for a suit and tie - but sport jacket won;t be scandalous - and for you sophisticated, dressy top with well-cut trousers or skirt.

(You will see young people more casually dressed in the cheapest seats - but the locals do tend to be a little more formal.)
