Prague live music/dinner
 

Hi Fellow Travellers,

I'm going to Prague with my girlfriend for a long weekend early in Novemeber 2004 and apart from seeing the National Symphony and perhaps a few other classical performances, I would like to experience as much live jazz, blues and any original music as a I possibly can. Can anyone recommend some funky music clubs where you can combine the tunes with a decent meal? We'll be staying at the Savoy Hotel (great deal on Expedia!) in Prague 1, near the Castle...

One restaurant on the hill walking from Charles Bridge up to the Prague Castle, I think it's called the Bazaar, had live music when we were there in June. Good food and service, too.

I think the JazzBoat would fill the bill perfectly! Dinner and jazz, while cruising on the beautiful Vltava, with the Castle area and beautiful buildings glowing with lights.

Don't go to the Art nouveau Hall in the Municipal theatre. It is a set up for tourists with second rate performers. The main hall of that theatre is called Svetlana- I think- and has quality performances. There may be other tourist set ups like this so be careful.

for Bobe, I mainly attend classical performances and so know a lot about them in Prague, and am just wondering how you will be able to do all of this in one long weekend. Each performance will take up that evening (espec the symphony) and you plan to attend several? well, aside from the major venues (like the Rudolfinum which is wonderful), I would highly recommend some chamber music at the Klementinum near the bridge. They have good groups, and the acoustics in the room they use are quite good (and they are cheap). Also, there are not tours of that facility, and it is the only way you can see that room of mirrors, as I recall.

Now, what do you mean by funky? The other main place I personally know that is not classical is the Cafe IMperial and that is a wonderful place to go for the ambience and food and a real Czech experience. It's very near Namesti Republicky metro stop. They have jazz (mostly really New Orleans style or Dixieland). Here is their web site and they list programs and some other cafe info:

I'm sure Prague has plenty of rock music clubs -- I don't think that's a city exactly known for blues, which is best in US, as far as I'm concerned. You will find some touring groups that do some blues. Lucerna Music Bar is one of the best places in Prague for live music, and they do have European and local bands. http://www.musicbar.cz

Archa Cafe is another place with local groups, but smaller, it's at Na Porici 26, which is right near Cafe Imperial. Here's a little about it, I haven't been there

For jazz, Reduta is wellknown (not cheap drinks) at Narodni 20, here's a comment on it:

There was a loud, popular club around my hotel I noticed -- the Roxy at 33 Dlouha. It is considered one of the best dance clubs, and it's not super upscale, but laidback, so you don't have to worry about being a model or anything.
