Prague in 5 days in May.
 

Need recommendations for theaters, jazz, interesting museums, one day trips from Prague. What hotel would you recommend (center).

Have you done any research? Why are you going to Prague? What has attracted you there? Whilst I don't mind answering specific questions and providing advice I find your post to be one of "I can't be bothered to research myself so I'll let others do the work for me".

Our first trip to Prague was 5 days, and we didn't leave for any day trips. I assume you are staying 6 nights.

We spent an entire day at the Prague Castle complex and re-visited another day in the late afternoon just to stroll around and watch the sunset.

If you want a useful hotel recommendation, you should provide some info as to your budget.

I've stayed in a couple hotels, my favorite is the HOtel Pariz (now they call it Paris, don't know why, you'd think people would want the real name). Can't beat the location and the hotel is very nice. But if you come back and say, well I want something real cheap, you should have said that.

Day trips I've done Kutna Hora and Cesky Krumlov, both were great. I do organized bus day trips. I did another but don't think it's offered any more as a bus tour. Oh yeah, once I did Tabor on my own by train and I really liked it also.

For theater, you should go to the National Theatre if there is anything on that you like.

Prague was on our list for a long time. We would like to stay in Prague 1, so we do not have to spent time on commute. Yes, I did research, but it's so much to see in Prague.

That's a nice looking hotel Christina. I'm just following this post as I am considering a short trip this summer.

i have been to most of them since 2008 and might be at this years ones if i can sort out work commintments.
never been to Ceske Krumlov (never wanted to go) but Kuna Hora and Tabor as previously mentioned are good as in Karlovy vary but loads of other places for day trips, Plzen, Ceske Budejovice (both have breweries) Podebrady,Melnik,Mlada Boleslav (Skoda car Museum),Turnov and many others.the Czech republic has a great and cheap public transport system.
As to hotel have a look atBooking.com and see what is available in your price range. Personally I stay out in the Dejvicka area of the city when I am there and with the fantastic integrated transport system can get anywhere in the city quite easily and very cheaply (mind you i do have an older persons pass now and get a months transport for 130kc.
Christina mentions the Hotel pariz ,it really is lovely but I have only been in there for a function.that area is an ideal place to be based and loads of hotels in that area (Namesti Republiky area) within most folks budget,also easy to walk to the Old town/New town sights and for public transport to the castle area and indeed anywhere in the city

Enjoyed our recent stay at Hotel Hastal (https://www.hotelhastalprague.com/en/) on the edge of the Old Town.

Museums: Prague Communism Museum, Kafka museum - both are great, informative, have interesting installations, etc.

Hotels: Everyone loves Hotel Pariz. If you're looking for a cheaper option, Hotel Kampa Gardens. Or if you want to stay closer to the castle, Hotel Aria.

Day Trip: I'd recommend Cesky Krumlov - adorable medieval "fairy-tale" type village with a castle. But you could also visit Karlstejn (a bigger castle) or go to Brno for a day, which in my opinion is underrated for such a relatively cool and quirky Czech city (that also has a castle).

We've been to Prague three times (the latest this last September) and found the public transport system to be wonderfully dependable and convenient. The combination of subway, light rail and busses will get you anywhere you wish to go quickly. We like the Mala Strana neighborhood because it's away from the main flow of tourists. You might like the Hotel Julian (our favorite). As far as sights go, The Municipal House Tour is well worth your time. For Czech art, consider the Mucha Museum or if it's still running, Mucha's Slav Epic.

sadly the Slav Epic has gone as from last week and no idea when it will finally be given a proper home.
i was lucky enough to see the whole exhibition twice as well as how the exhibition was set up, an amazing experience.
