Prague: hotels Golden Well vs Pachtuv Palace? anyone there recently?

debating about a "splurge" for ambiance and views from hotel on our first trip to Prague: up high or by river...
we love to walk, no mobility issues
different views/locations: would love opinions from regulars who know Prague

(I'd asked about 4* hotels in earlier post, but considering this category, if indeed an amazing experience)
Fodors and TA highly recommend as well as friends of ours, but not recently there...
thank you !!

I have not stayed at either (more than my usual budget) but have been to Prague many times in last 10 years and know the locations of the both and heard a lot about their reputations. I think U Zlaté Studně (Golden Well Hotel) up in Mala Strana is more of splurge than Pachtuv. If you are ready to pay the price of U Zlaté Studně, you can also consider Aria also in Mala Strana but in a lower area by the American Embassy. U Zlaté Studně is in much quieter area vs Pachtuv in the thick of the action, potentially can be noisy, in more lively area. There it's really up to your preference.

But for the hotels, hopefully some one who have stayed there will answer. Last review on U Zlaté studně was posted on TA 3 days ago. Others a few weeks. Pachtuv has some more recent ones, posted like today....

I stayed at U Zlaté Studně last September. It is located in the middle of the hill between Malostranske and the Prague Castle. The hotel has an entrance from below, and during the day, it has an entrance from a passage between the ridge line passage next to the castle wall on the way to the upper entrance to the Zahrady Garden (an obscure cut off exists before hitting the Zahrady Garden toll booth.) I have also eaten dinner at U Zlaté Studně as a splurge dinner. Superb offering and the view of the city. The breakfast room overlooks the city.

It was not a first choice, but there were major events going on in the old town and all the hotels I wanted to stay were booked up months in advance.

As a splurge, I was not disappointed. However, this is not a hotel with those with mobility problems. The taxi cannot get to the front of the hotel and the elevator cannot get to the breakfast room. You have to walk up one flight of stairs to the breakfast room and two flights for lunch and dinner. Our room even had spiral stairs from the door to our room to the bedroom. Also, it was a trek to the old town area. You need really sturdy shoes. The cobble stone streets in Prague are uneven. It was more tiring than walking in Italian old towns.

Hi,

Before moving to Prague for good, I visited Pachtuv Palace once and had a great stay! The location is perfect (facing the castle, 2 min walk from Charles brudge, and 5 min from old town qquare), and the rooms are nice and big.
So as to get good prices, make sure you book in advance!

Enjoy your time in Prague!

Nicolas
