Prague hotel prices?
 

I am planning next year's trip and want to go to Prague. I'm trying to get an idea of hotel prices and so far, everything I seem to see is higher than hotels in Paris or Amsterdam, even Venice...so obviously I must be doing something wrong. Help!!

I usually travel as a single, and prefer not to spend more than $150 a night. Any suggestions for hotels in Prague in that price range? Everything I seem to find on the internet so far, is $250 + .... I know that can't be right....Help Prague Visitors!!

I haven't been to Amsterdam for a long time, so can't compare, but I would say hotels are a little pricier in Prague than Paris, for the same thing. Not a whole lot, though, and as in many places, you can find a wide range of prices depending on what you want to spend and what kind of place you want to stay.

Maybe you are going during some special holiday period or some other time with high rates, it's hard to tell, but otherwise I would definitely say you are doing something wrong as there are many hotels below $200 a night in Prague. Are you only looking at 4 and 5* hotels? I stayed in the Hotel Pariz last July, which was wonderful, and I think I did splurge on that trip and pay about 180-200 euro, but that was a 5* hotel. I have stayed twice at the 4* Maximilian, which is a great location, and I just checked and it shows a single room rate next June at only 133 euro a night. Their singles are pretty big, also, I've been in one.

I also checked on www.marys.cz which is a good accommodation site that has been in business many years, and they show lots of 3* hotels in Prague 1 (the central area) for 100 euro or less. For example, the 3* Cloister Inn which is a good location is shown on there at $147 or 111 euro (3130 CK) for a single, outside the peak rate period. The Cloister Inn's own website shows 136 euro for June 2007 for a single. Mary's could have a discount, it is quite common for Prague hotels to particular on discount booking websites. It is also common for rates to be quoted in euro, and perhaps also in CK or USD, if they have options. They should be comparable and straightforward conversions, as the above example on Marys shows, although you'll have to pay in CK.

thanks for the info...I plan on going the first 2 weeks of October, don't know whether I'll go to Prague at teh beginning or end of my trip. I've been checking some more and finding some more reasonable hotels...

However, since Prague is totally new to me and none of my friends have been there, I would love any suggestions Fodorites may have.

When I was there in April, I stayed at a pension between Wenceslas Square and Old Town Square. It was much cheaper than a hotel. It was very basic, but my view is that I'm not there for the accommodations. Might be something to look into if you continue finding hotel prices out of your preferred spending limit. Have a great trip.

We were in Prague in April and used Priceline for the Marriott hotel near Old Town for $105 a night. The hotel is very nice and safe (I think it's 5 stars) and the location is perfect for us since it's not in the middle of Old town with all the tourists but only 5-8 mins walk to Charles Bridge. Like Christina, I wonder what you are doing "wrong" not finding hotels within your budget. eg, venere.com gives many choices under €150 and some even under €100. Maybe you are looking at all wrong sites or only looking at 5* hotels? I'd recommend Residence Mala Strana 3*. I liked the area from my stay 2 weeks go. I stayed at Hotel Roma 4* in the same area for €75/double(low season rate) and was very good. I'm going again in the end of January but then Roma is €160 (!) so I opted for Residence Mala Strana. Its reviews are very positive on Tripadvisor.com. Their rooms are only "junior suites" and "senior suites". For my January single, I'm paying €45 (junior S.). For Oct.2007, venere.com shows €82. Of course you can reserve direct too.

(I noticed an error on my post there. I will pay my junior suite, single use €45 in January is correct as stated above and NOT €60.)

thanks for the help....I did keep looking and did find hotels in my price range...I think that somehow the first few websites I hit upon were higher end hotels..I just couldn't believe that only more expensive hotels were in Prague!

One more question, how many days would you suggest I spend in Prague. I like to really see a city, would 4 days be enough or too much?

People must have different opinions but 4 days seems to me just right amount of days or maybe you might feel you wanted more. That's what I had 2 weeks ago. Although that was my 5th time there, I thought I could have had a couple of more days. That's why I'm returning there in end of jan, again for 4 days.

I just checked my credit card and I only paid US$160 for the Hotel Pariz last July, and I think that's a 5* hotel. I do think July-August rates are not as high as some other periods, though, and that October may be a higher rate period, as it usually is in most major capitals. Of course, the US dollar has really sunk lately and is at a real low right now against major European currencies, so that doesn't help. It drops against the CK very similar to against the euro. I notice right now you get only 21 CK for one USD, and I think last summer I got around 26-28. I remember when I first went I got about 40. Maybe it will be better by next Fall.

Anyway, I think four days is a good amount of time if that works best for you. It is certainly not too long, Prague is a major city with a lot to see and do. It's a good time period for many visitors.

Check Grand Hotel Praha. They have 1 single room. Depending on the dates, you can get it for $150 USD.

You should be able to find plenty of rooms in your range, though, unless there is a big event in town that week.

Hotel Don Giovanni is the one we use. I think it is in your price range. Lovely hotel and I think great location.

I would agree that four full days in Prague is probably sufficient depending upon your interests.

two years ago we stayed at the hotel Central [no prizes for guessing where it is] in Prague. Even between Christmas and New Year it was very reasonable. Good breakfast too, and helpful concierge. It's really a business hotel, but none the worse for that.
Only problem was that every time we came back to it, it seemed to have moved and we couldn't find it! [well not easily, anyway, but we always did in the end].
