Prague, Budapest, Krakow--Safe for Woman Alone?

Does anyone have an opinion on the relative safety of Krakow, Prague and/ or Budapest for a woman travelling alone?

I'm a man, so do not speak from experience. But you can get advice from twelve consuls on four web sites

from Australia on http://www.dfat.gov.au/consular/advice
from Britain on
from Canada on http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/menu-e.asp, under "Travel Reports"
from the USA on http://travel.state.gov/travel_warnings.html
Some experienced American travellers find the American site over-cautious. It is therefor useful to check all four sites.

I must say I'd be jolly surprised if you faced any problem. In these three cities many women work, with a proportion of professional and senior people similar to that of men, and there's no tedious Meditteranean custom of flirting with unknown women.

In railway sleeping cars women are booked into separate compartments from men, and doors have locks and fitted chains. The night trips from Prague to Budapest, Budapest to Krakow, Krakow to Budapest and Krakow to Prague are all long enough to get a full night's sleep, especially if you board and go to bed thirty minutes before the train leaves.

Please write if I can help further. Welcome to Europe.

I can only speak for Prague, and if you take the normal precautions you'd take anywhere, you'll be fine in Prague. There's very little violent crime, just pickpockets and the like. There are definitely parts of town I would not wander around it late at night alone, so use your best judgement, but during the day/evening and especially in the tourist areas, you're very safe. Remember, don't wear a backpack on your back in crowded areas, never ever put your wallet in the small, outside pocket of any bag, wear purses or bags securely -- over your shoulder and under your arm, use the pouch for valuables under your clothing, and be aware of what's happening around you. If you're not comfortable, ask for assistance, people are helpful. Also, there are lots of Americans around so you'll never really be alone.

I've only been to Krakow once, and other than noticing that the streets were emptier (which made me less comfortable), I can't share any impressions. I didn't feel as safe in Budapest as I do in Prague, partly because the city center is not so compact and I don't know the city as well. Perhaps someone else can comment on that?

In any case, have fun!

I'm very familiar with Krakow Budapest and Prague - and they are ALL save for single woman. I agree with Ben. As for emptier streets in Krakow I disagree - unless the weather is bad. In Krakow and Prague women are treated with the highest respect thanks to the eastern european culture.

Thank you very much for your replies Ben, Helena and Peter. I travel alone frequently and generally feel comfortable as long as I take the usual precautions. I think I just needed some reassurance. Thank you, again.
