Prague, Budapest and Vienna
 

I'm planning a trip to these 3 cities in early October. having never been to this region before, I have no idea in what order to go. Any suggestions? I understand the train is the preferred method of transportation?

It all depends on your itinerary. It's often cheaper to fly into and out of Vienna from the U.S. You can easily take a train from Vienna to Prague or Budapest, but I'd strongly recommend flying if you are traveling between Prague and Budapest because of the distance and time involved.

If you do Budapest to Vienna to Prgaue none of the rail legs are long. So _ would do an open jaws like that - but it depends on your departure airport, flights and rates avialble.

But, between Prague and Budapest if 7 to 8 hours - so if going from one to the other flying is better.

or take the overnight Prague-Budapest train and save on time and hotel

In Czech Republik, there's a charming small town called Cesky Krumlov. It is an UNESCo site, and it's one of the most best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, since no war had reached it. Since the country isn't that big, you can rent a car in Prague ( the roads are in good condition, and despite the language, the access is easy)or take a bus to get there.

we just did these cities last week. for four people, we found mike's chauffeurs to be the most economical as we didn't have to worry about taxis to the rail stations on either side and we stopped off for sight seeing along the way. much less taxing than worrying about rail schedules and dragging the luggage.

whenzuc - just curious how affordable these transfer services are? What'd it cost? thanks.
