In today's New York Times, there is an article about some of the better restaurants in Prague

http://www.nytimes.com/2001/07/29/travel/29TAB.html

You need to register to see the article (for free for two weeks).

Prague has soon great restaurants although are not cheap - try Pravda Barock and Kampa Park(great view of Charles Bridge)

Check wunderground.com for weather history as well as current. We were there in November so can't help with the open-air cafes but you might check nethotels.com for events & dining information. In Budapest you must have coffee and dessert at the Gellert. The Prague restaurants were not expensive and the Budapest ones were very inexpensive.

Susan, I was in both cities during the last 2 weeks of Sept 2 years ago and the weather was perfect. Did not need a jacket except for some evenings and then only a light jacket. The days were warm and only had one day with some rain. Beautiful cities. If you have any questions feel free to email me.
Regards,
Art
We were there at the end of September and the weather was perfect, sunny, mild and really nice to stroll around or sit at cafes. Both are really interesting cities, being Prague a bit more scenic, especially the absolutely wonderful Charles Bridge.
