Prague Accommodations
 

I will arrive in Prague on 14 May from Novy Jicin and flying on 17 May. I'm looking for a reasonably priced place to stay, preferably with breakfast available or close to a cafe. I would also appreciate suggestions for places to eat. I've jotted down a few from other postings but always looking for more. Thanks!

How much is "reasonably priced"?

I'm hoping for around $80 USD a night. I've been looking all day on various sites, including travelcook, and it's tough to decide what is a good value. I was in Cologne last fall and the tram system was great. If Prague is similar, I would consider staying a little farther out.

Here are a few hotels that look promising: Akcent Hotel, Andels Hotel, Hotel Galileo, Hotel Atlantic, and Golder Star (Zlata Hvezda)

Anyone have any comments on these? And best website to book on?

Prague has a great tram and metro system,so might be worth looking further out.

I have in the past stayed in the Smichov and the Zizkov areas close enough to the city centre but a good bit cheaper for accomodation.
The 3 crowns hotel in Zizkov is very good, a few minutes walk to the trams and about 6 or 7 minutes into the centre from there.i have stayed there twice once in the standard room ,once in the superior rooms,to tell the truth I prefered the standard rooms.
I stayed in the Berlin hotel in Smichov a few years back but that has now been upgraded and the name changed to the Boutique Hotel,so i daresay prices will have gone up.
I have also stayed in the Quality Inn on Becvarova which is close to the Strasnicka metro but there are also a couple of tram lines nearby.
I am visiting necxt month staying in the Hotel Pav on the edge of the old town,it is costing about £90 per night which i think is a good bit above your budget.

you mention Andels Hotel in your previous post.This is in a great location in the Smicov area,it is on a major tram /metro interchange so very easy to get all over the city from there.across the road is a large shopping center and there are numerous bars and resturants in the area.

we were booked into antik hotel
that is in a great location near the old town
but beware it has a sister hotel called hotel city antik- and thats the one we ended up staying in - bummer

i popped into a hostel - the medvedinka ( something like that - i think it means little bear- it came recommended by the lonely planet book)
that looked quite good but having not stayed there i cant really comment except to say that it was in a good location

I recommend restaurant DAVID in Mala Strana. Superb.

We stayed in U Suteru a few years ago - www.usuteru.cz - and it was very satisfactory. Within walking distance of everywhere and perfectly clean, safe and comfortable.

To eat I'd recommend U Medvidku - as above - for a genuine Czech beerhall experience - www.umedvidku.cz . For lunch or a cheaper dinner Cafe Louvre - near the National Theatre - is excellent - www.cafelouvre.cz . And for something more upmarket (read expensive!) try La Perle de Prague - www.laperle.cz - on top of the "Fred and Ginger" building for amazing views or in the Mala Strana area try Hergetova Cihelna - http://www.kampagroup.com/en/restaurant.php?rid=1 (in the grounds of the Franz Kafka Museum) - book a table with river views.

Have you found a place to stay at? In 2003 we stayed at the Pension Deitzenhofer in Mala Strana & really enjoyed it. Quiet area, delicious breakfast. Don't remember what we paid, though.

The food at Le Perle isn't that spectacular, but the views of Prague from its windows are.

I am another person that can reccomend U Medvidku ,it is usually my first stop when in Prague,I am staying about 250 yards from there on my trip next month,good Czech food,good service and the best glass of "tankova" budvar in the city.they also have their own micro brewery and make Oldgott beer,but to get it on draught you have to go to the section at the back of the main bar and up the stairs,it is well worth it.
They also have a great beer shop that sell stuff from all over the country as well as all manner of beer related goodies.

Thanks for all your suggestions! Unfortunately, my plans changed and I will be staying at the Holiday Inn Airport in Prague and have only 1 full day to explore.

I just need to get from the hotel to downtown as early as possible to see everything and then back to the hotel as late as possible. I'd like to stick with buses or trains based on all the negative feedback on the cabs...

AAA taxi company is the only way to go, in Prague. All drivers speak English and they don't rip you off!

a taxi from the airport to the centre would cost you about 550Kc depending on traffic. It is always cheaper to go by public transport, 26Kc ticket (less than £1) will get you to the centre in about 45 minutes. Take bus 119 from the airport to its terminal station at Dejvicka, then jump onto the metro for a couple of stops and you are there.

La Perle has been closed since, at least a few months or so, I heard. I heard also there was a plan to open a new restaurant there soon.

Probably la Perla has been closed since more than a few months because the new restaurant seems open since sometime. It's called Céleste.

I have not dined at any restaurant that cost that much so far. But maybe sometime for a special occasion and for the view.

Good luck man. You'll still have fun for one day. Public transportation to Prague center per wobbers post. Just get on line, print out a couple of notes with maps for you to refer to when you are asking questions and checking "maps" at the station. Get on line, a few Czech phrases, like do you speak English? Which train to Staromeska? Etc.... REad or "show"... Lots of people speak English now.... but still, you have One day. Be prepared.

I recommend enjoying the Old Town square, walk across bridge, and walk up to the castle by way of a great garden!!! I can't remember the name of the garden though. Walk back down the main "street" of Mala Strana... Nerudova.... Or take side streets to avoid crowds.... Most of all, don't try to see too much. Any moment in Prague is a large, grande moment. Enjoy.
