Prague?

In a search of my next trip, I found some good deals for Prague through mid March.
Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of Prague in March, or just Prague in general?

We went to prague in March 2003. It was quite cold but we had lots of sunny days. The city center was not crowded at all. People would start building up around 11am. If you get an early start you can do lots of things and take lots of pictures on the bridge with very few people.

Thanks purplefish! I really don't know anything about Prague. Is there lots to do? Is there many people that speek English?

Depending on what your interests are, I think 3 to 5 days is sufficient to look around and shop enough at a comfortable pace. We enjoyed doing lots of walking and slow lunches especially in Kampa overlooking the bridge. We stayed only 3 days. We didn't have time to go out of town and see some castles. I also suggest you get a guide to give you a walking tour of the city center. We are not familiar with its history and architecture. Having a knowledgeable guide really added a lot to our experience.

Thanks for the tips!

Prague is magical, one of my favorite cities. There is plenty to do along the usual lines of what people want to do when visiting European cities. You haven't said what kind of things you like to do or where you like, so hard to tell for you. I've not been there in March, but you know the weather.

If you are thinking of going there, why don't you read a little about it -- there are plenty of free online travel sites that give descriptions and summaries of top tourist sites. I'll bet Fodors does -- try Frommers, also, and there are lots of specific sites if you use google.

As for language, definitely no problem in the central city area. English is very widely spoken.

Prague is an excellent and major destination in Europe. I think you do yourself and Prague a disservice by relying on this web site, or on theinternet in general to make a decision about going there without a full-fledged BOOK on all the city - - and its surroundings - - have to offer you.

In the meantime, you can get a good overview at www.jasoncholt.com

Best wishes,

Rex

Personally, I wouldn't go to Prague just because there are "good deals" as the main impetus. It is a wonderful city IMO BUT if you have no interest in baroque adornment, being in a city that has sections which, literally, still seem almost medieval, exteriors that have been used in many movies (Prague doubling for Zurich in the "Bourne Identity" and for Vienna, I believe, in "Amadeus" and the list goes on.

The people are friendly, the public transportation is excellent and easy to navigate, and for many a visit there is unforgettable.

March will undoubtedly be cool and probably damp but certainly uncrowded..hopefully you'll have some sunny weather.

I won't presume to tell you where you have to go to find out the amount of information you might need to make your decision since those "needs" vary with the individual. What I WILL presume is that if you find you have an interest you'll never regret going.

Have a great trip.

I went to Prague in March and had great weather, warm and sunny. I'm sure that isn't the norm though. But we had a great time and one major reason was that is wasn't terribly crowded. I am sure in the summer the Charles Bridge is wall to wall people but in march it wasn't that bad. I loved prague but the above posters are correct, you should research the destination for yourself and see if it interests you and not just rely on this forum to make that decision.

From the sound of things, and not surprisingly, March can me a mixed month weatherwise.

I was there for a long weekend this March and the weather was great with clear skies, sunny days and no rain. We were probably lucky.

I wouldn't hesitate to go again in March, but the main driver for that is probably to avoid the worst of the crowds in the summer months. Charles Bridge and much of the Old Town was busy enough in March, I can't imagine what it must be like in the summer months.

How I wish I'd first travelled to Prague 10 or so years ago!

We went to Prague in late March, early April in 2002, had good weather and absolutely loved it. We were in Prague for 5 days, then 5 days or so in the countryside and returned for another day in Prague before flying home from there. We found plenty to fill all 6 days we spent. You can find my report by searching on Czech Republic Trip report using my old screen name Julie

I just returned from Prague on 10/4/04, a little over a week ago. It was the most beautiful city! Beautiful architecture, cobblestone streets and sidewalks, and all those red roofs! I liked it because there wasn't a whole laundry list of things to see like in Paris or Rome. We concentrated on the Royal Route from the Powder Tower in Stare Mesto across the Charles Bridge and to the castle in Mala Strana. We spent a lot of time sitting in outdoor cafes (primarily in Old Town Square) having drinks or meals and just watching the world go by. Note that although this trip was taken in late September/early October, we couldn't have eaten outside anywhere that didn't have those huge heaters--it was chilly! There were many other things to do: museums, shopping, heading out to the countryside to visit other castles like Karlstejn and Konopiste, but we were content to stay in the city and relax. We spent four days there. It was easy to walk everywhere--we didn't need to use the metro. Everyone spoke English, and everywhere we ate had menus translated into at least five different languages. I would highly recommend Prague.

For historical weather info, check any of several websites, including
www.wunderground.com

I was there last March, first week.
There was a coating of snow on the ground when we arrived, and for several days temps stayed in the 30sF. According to the newspaper, both Oslo and Reykjavik were warmer. For the last day or two, temps crept into the lower 40s. Sunshine every day. That said, we loved it anyway.

If you decide to go, one great website is www.jasoncholt.com

I also have a file on Prague, if you'd like to see it, email me at
