Pousada Sale

Between Sept. 15-30, with a two-night stay, you can get an 85 euro rate at 12 different pousadas:

Alcacer do Sal, Arraiolos, Beja, Estremoz, Marvao, Manteigas, Torreira, Viseu,
Queluz, Ourem, Palmela, Alijo.

Though these may not be the most popular pousadas, some of them are really nice. Alcacer is very modern in the walls of an old castle, nice little town, near salt flats;

Arraiolos -- several of us routinely rave about that one, in an old convent surrounded by countryside

Beja -- old monastery in a southern Alentejo town that is a good base for visiting that part of the Alentejo

Marvao (haven't ever stayed in the pousada but it's a gorgeous little town);

Manteigas (don't know it);

Torreira (nice on the inlet, very peaceful, though not much in the way of architecture);

Viseu (one of the newer pousadas, done in modern minimalist style, not my ides of how to decorate a 19th century building);

Queluz (recently totally renovated, very close to Lisbon, near the Palace of Queluz which is an often overlooked gem IMO, also well situated for driving to Sintra);

Ourem (never been there),

Palmela (castle high on a hill, very nice and close to Lisbon);

Alijo (modern and comfortable but not a jaw-dropping place -- in the Douro Valley but relatively far from the river).

This is a good price for room and breakfast for two.

Great information, Laurie!

PS - I've asked the editors to tag this for Portugal for folks who look by country.

This is great news. Most of these places are to die for.

I am so glad Queluz is done...The grand old lady was in much need of a face lift but even sadly down trodden she still was lovely..Don't miss this sale if you are in Portugal..The price is more than right..

I agree amer_can. I haven't seen the renovations yet, but I assume they have kept the same charm and haven't gone to that "sleek hip minimalist" style that some of their more recent pousadas have been decked out in (Viseu, Tavira for instance).

I'll also just add that this is a great pousada for a last night before the flight. It's close to the airport and gives you an opportunity to visit the Queluz Palace, which IMO is terribly overlooked.

DD and I were at Queluz aand did the palace. Beautiful!! And what to our wondering eyes should appear but 4 groups of Payschool kids. All 4 sets were outfitted in small veats and berets of a color for each group. They were being ushered about by 2 young court attendents in full regalia. Suddenly everyone stopped and a hush was demanded by the leaders...A panelled door opened, an impressive court attendent entered and annpounced that Dona Maria was arriving. A lovely young lady, again infull court dress, entered and the ohs and ahs (including ours) were worth the entrance fee alone. the children were allowed to ask Dona Maria's attendent questions which she answered relaying the answers through him. what an event!! What a pousada and what a country!!!
