pounds or dollars?

I know I have to use pounds to buy things in London. If I charge something do they say pounds or dollars? What do I say in return?

Okay, if you are serious, the word "dollar" shouldn't enter the conversation. Why would it? Now, the charge slip might show dollars, but if it does, kick up a fuss and insist on paying in pounds. If you want to know why, do a search on the phrase dynamic currency conversion.

luv2things: Sorry, but you are giving bad info . . . .

farrelb1: Many merchants - From Harrods on down, may ask you if you want to be billed in £ or $. In no case should you ask for $. It will end up costing you several % more in the end. Whenever given the choice - always ask to be charged in local currency (in this case £)

luv2cthings: My response was re "the word "dollar" shouldn't enter the conversation. Why would it? "

DCC is another side of the coin - in those cases the merchant usually doesn't ask first, but simply runs the charge in $. Always ask for the slip to be voided and re-run in £.
