I have never been to Portugal, What is a good itinerary for a weeks stay? Plan on coming in Feb. in lieu of my usual ski vacation. Also any lodging recommedations for my wife and myself? Thank you in advance for your help.

In Lisbon, I can recommend the Hotel Metropole on Rossio Square. A room overlooking the square is best - it will not be noisy. Good views of the castle, etc. From this location you can walk to many places. Fairly large, comfortable room, large bathroom, very clean, great front desk staff, very helpful, very good full breakfast. Price approx. $100US for a double.

With only a week you might want to stick with Lisbon and Sintra. Someone else here highly recommended a hotel in Sintra (or near), Quinta das Sequoias.

If you want me to check my files for fax # for Metropole and website for Sequoias, email me. I love Portugal, I think you will too.

I'm planning on going to Lisbon this February - I understand that Portugal has Carnival - is it always in February? I know it will be mild - the weather that is. I'm not looking for a Rio / Mardi Gras party time but I am interested in adjusting my trip if possible to see some parades. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I've been in Lisbon in February when it certainly wasn't mild. The Metropole in a very central location - but another reasonable place nearby - just behind the Mundial - is Hotel Portugal. It is an old hotel which was redone for the Lisbon fair a few years ago. I found it very clean, almost cheap and with a good buffet breakfast included.

Thanks for the response Royboy. Some of the guide books said that the temp should be around 65F/ 17C - what was your experience? Also - was it rainy? I might shift my visit to March - living here in NYC, mild for me is about 40F / 10C.

M Tyner,
Carnival in Lisbon is 4-7 February. There will also be the Fado Festival between 5-13 Feb.
I went to carnival a few years ago in Sesimbra (near Lisbon) and it was alot of fun... it was much milder than New Orleans or Rio by a long shot.
