You may be able to retrieve it (your <i>long</i> response) by using the "back" icon (enough times); if you're lucky, it will take you back to the screen where you were composing.
This used to be a <u>very</u>frequent complaint, as the 500 word limit was undocumented by Fodors. But clearly the limit (if it exists at all) is much higher now.
I think that most "veterans" do one of two things when planning to make a lengthy post... either compose separately (in a word processing program, for example) and cut and paste in your reply... or compose here - - but just before you click "post" (or sooner, if you want to cover your tail) - - copy/paste your incomplete posting - - and put a "safe" copy of it somewhere else (again, like... in a word processing program, or in an e-mail to yourself).
