Posting photos on a website from Europe

Which site do you use, and why? I want to try one that's easy for me to post photos as I go along, so I can bring family and friends on the trip with me so to speak, and easy for them to view the pics.

I use fotopic.net, it's got a lot of free storage (250MB), it's cheap to add more if you need to (5 GBP per 250MB), and is easy to upload photos to (a variety of different methods you can use, from emailing them, to FTP, a browser client for FTP, or, if all else fails, HTTP).

Yeah, it's really easy; if you run a normal browser (firefox or internet explorer) the Java shell for the FTP (you don't need to know what they mean) will work perfectly, it lets you upload whole folders at a time, while, on some public computers, they block FTP access, and there the HTTP access (basically just uploading it like you upload information to a website, as in these posts you're typing here) will always work, though you can only send 10 at a time. It's not at all difficult, I just wanted to provide the information, in case it did mean something.

Hi K,

All those letters are various formats. Don't worry about it.

Also try http://www.kodakgallery.com.

No, not really formats, those would be gif, jpeg, bmp, etc. They're the different transmission protocols you can use to send the picture files. Doesn't matter to most users of course, though.

Just to clarify some terms.

Mb as in 250Mb is millions of bytes. This could be the size of a file (2 to 4Mb) or how much space they make available to you (250Mb). A typical photo would be anywhere the 75,000bytes (.07Mb) to 4,000,000bytes (4Mb).

ftp is a method of uploading or downloading files from a source (typically your computer) to a destination (typically the web server).

Slight clarification on the last clarification. Mb is megabits, millions of bits, while MB is megabytes, millions of bytes (a byte is 8 bits). Nobody really measures things in Mb anymore (storage capacity has grown immensely since the early days of computers), still just good practice to use the proper abbreviations to avoid any confusion.

The FTP definition is more thorough than mine, though, and quite correct.
