Posting Etiquette
To those who commented about my posting my Italy travelogue in two parts . . . one person suggested that I should have posted both parts as one thread. But an earlier attempt wouldn't allow me to post -- and since I'd seen other "2-parters," I assumed it was because my travelogue was too long.
Someone else suggested that I should have listed part 2 as a "response" to the first post so that it would all remain together. That seems like a good idea. Is there a consensus? Also, how do you know if your post is too long to be in one part? Thanks. |
there are no rules written in stone.

Hi Songdoc,
I think that 500 words is as much as the computer will accept. Many people write out the full report in Word (or whatever) save it as "text only" and then copy and paste the sections as separate posts on a single thread. I'm sure you have noticed that your Part 2 has become separated from Part 1. |
Thanks. That makes sense.

Recently it seems that the site is accepting longer posts than it used to, but I really don't know what the limit is. But I think it's a pretty common consensus that YES you should post the second or subsequent parts of the same trip report as responses to the first one to keep them all together.

That's what I did Song, as I don't know any other way.

As Mimi said there are no rules so if you have a preference for either separate threads or multiple posts in one thread, please do feel free to choose whichever you prefer. Personally I prefer to see trip reports contained in one thread where the original poster just clicks on reply to the first message and adds the rest of the report that way. This just means that the entire report stays together and is easy to find in it's entirety in the future. But there are no rules so... don't feel constrained... |
The "etiquette" is clearly unwritten.
As I mentioned, clicking on your name makes it fairly easy to find the subsequent parts of a trip report. And for what it's worth, it's not too late (theoretically, it's "never" too late) to post part 2 as a reply to part 1. That would kinda end this discussion. Best wishes, Rex |
Rex, you should know that you can't end a discussion by being logical...;)
