Posting a trip report from Word

OK, I'm traveling with laptop and have been keeping my "journal" as I go along. Is there a way I can cut and paste from Word into this box? It seems I saw this before, but not sure now how to do it. Remember, I'm not overly computer literate, so if anyone can explain how to do this in simple terms I'd appreciate it.

Sure, highlight all of your word document, or however much you would like to copy, by right clicking and dragging. Put your mouse over the highlighted part and right click. Select Copy. Open a screen to make a new post in Fodors. Right click in the text box and select Paste. Then preview your post, because I believe a lot of apostrophe's etc turn into ? marks, which can be annoying. Then click post. Voila!

Hope this helps!

Sorry, to highlight you hold down the left click and drag. To copy and paste you right click!

Thanks. Sure sounds easy enough. I'm sitting in the BA Club Lounge awaiting my flight to Berlin now but using their free computers. When I get to Berlin, hopefully I'll post my London report from my laptop.

Don't forget that there's a lmiit to hte length of replies -- somewhere between 300 and 500 words, so C&P pieces of that length, and post the second and later pieces as replies to the first, so the whole story stays together.

(Patrick, I'm aware that you know this tidbit, but it should be here in this thread for future reference!)

Hi Patrick,

When you copy from Word to Fodors your quotation marks (&quot turn into question marks (?). Use apostrophes (') instead.

I'd look for the "smart quotes" check box in the "autocorrect" section. You can turn these off. It turns double and single quotes into fancy curved quotes in Word. These characters post as question marks and such on this forum.

(I'm at home where I don't have Word but it's in one of the options sections somewhere. You may have to look around a bit.)

Have a great trip and drink a beer in Leipzig for me!

I don't know about more recent versions of Word, but in Word '97 (from Office 97), you go to the "Tools" section of the primary menu bar, select "AutoCorrect," then select "AutoFormat," and uncheck the Replace "Smart quotes with straight quotes" box.

Hope this works.

Also I believe Fodor's has expanded the length of posts to at least 1000 words. I think I posted a 900+ post the other day.

Also, in Word, if you don't want to turn off the Smart Quote function, you can just change a quote mark back immediately after typing it by hitting Ctrl Z to undo.
