Postal buses/Scotland

Can someone shed light on how one goes about to ride a post bus? As an example one runs from Pitlochry to Rannoch station. Do you just show up at the Post Office or?

I remember getting this bus years ago.
The bus will just pick you up at any stop on the route.
In these rural areas they will often stop just about anywhere. They dont just do post offices.

As far as you're concerned, they're just another bus. In a town like Pitlochry, they use the same bus stops as other buses (and in Pitlochry, from memory that's some distance from the post office).

In some of the tinier villages the postbuses are really designed to serve, they might stop outside the post office, because it's also the village convenience store, dry cleaning dropoff, local gossip centre and the only commercial building in the place. But it'll vary.

Find the relevant stop (everyone will know) and be there when the bus is due to leave. Just pay the driver unless you've got an over-60s free bus pass.

They'll pick you up anywhere if it's safe to do so - and there's space.

Remember these are intended mainly for the locals for whom it might be the only way they have to get around

So carrying half a tonne of luggage isn't going to make you popular

PS: Zippo is also right. Outside the centre of substantial towns - like Pitlochry - postbuses generally stop anywhere passengers want them to that's safe.

Thank you very much. How do you know which Royal Mail bus goes where? I would hate to hail one that is going someplace else. The Royal Mail site stated that postal buses could just be a regular car.

These are GOOd questions. But the Rannoch Station Post Bus is the only one that runs through Pitlochry, and it runs there and back once a day

The timetable is here

It leaves the PO in Pitlochry, but you can hail it anywhere on the route.

Roger? Carry loads of luggage? This man goes round Britain with little more than his wallet!
