Hey, well it depends on where your heart is/was/wants to be!

Glad someone mentioned L'Auberge Español - released here as 'The Spanish Apartment'. As I love Spain I would also have to mention Hable con Ella - which is a 5 star movie any which way. And "Blood Wedding".

A Passage to India, Heat and Dust, The Chess Players, Monsoon Wedding. And towering above them all - The Jewel in the Crown (though only a TV series).

Out of Africa, The Constant Gardener, Somewhere in Africa.

Walkabout, Japanese Story, Lantana and the most brilliant film I have just seen "Jindabyne".

nibblette Aug 13th, 2006 05:06 AM

Talented Mr. Ripley.

Four Weddings and A Funeral

The Piano

The Lord of the Rings movies. How stunning was New Zealanad?

momofrajah Aug 13th, 2006 03:11 PM

The Agony and the Ecstasy - Charlton Heston, Rex Harrison, Michaelangelo, Florence and Rome. What a fun grouping!!

Alfred Hitchcock as the master of travel movies - To Catch a Thief, The Man who Knew Too Much and North by Northwest...

and yes, another vote for Sound of Music!!

olive_oil Aug 13th, 2006 03:30 PM

I had to go to Scotland after seeing Local Hero. Did anyone else see that?

Underhill Aug 13th, 2006 03:59 PM

Thierry l'Hermite, a favorite actor of mine, was in "Until September," a fine film about France during the war years.

We could add another of his: "The Dinner Friends."

tuscanlifeedit Aug 13th, 2006 04:11 PM

Olive Oil, I used to watch Local Hero over and over again; I loved that movie.

And I want to add Barcelona, which is also a huge favorite of mine, and one that I can watch any time.

katya_NY Aug 13th, 2006 08:34 PM

Just Married.

French Kiss.

(<i>Everything is Illuminated</i> still, too.)

- Okay- not literally... but I still love the movie. :)

Two for the Road - I saw it in my &quot;youth&quot; but it was 20+ years before I could start my travels to Europe. I've told my husband when he retires next year we are going to backpack through Europe! Elderhostel comes to mind!!!!

luvlondon Aug 13th, 2006 08:56 PM

1. Anne of the Thousand Days...Richard Burton as Henry VIII and Genevieve Bujold as Anne Boleyn
2.Dr.Zhivago
3. What a Girl Wants
4. Notting Hill
4. Both Bridget Jones Diary movies

luvtotravel Aug 13th, 2006 10:19 PM

&quot;Enchanted April,&quot; &quot;Dangerous Beauty,&quot; and &quot;Summertime.&quot;

I also agree about the beautiful shots of Santorini in &quot;Summer Lovers,&quot; even though it's a dreadful movie. Based on my experiences in Greece, I'm convinced &quot;Shirley Valentine&quot; is not a piece of fiction!

I bought all of these movies and never tire of watching them.

Another one whose name I can't quite remember is with Christopher Walken and is filmed in Venice. It has the word Strangers in the title. A little creepy.

Nina66 Aug 14th, 2006 01:27 AM

luvtotravel, The Comfort of Strangers. Great shots of backstreet Venice. I love Christopher Walken.

Starrsville, thanks for reminding me I much I enjoyed Shrirley Valentine. I think I will rent it to see it again.

So many great movies listed here and so many of them American or English made.

What a great list of see agains.

A lot of great movies and I would like to add another oldie, Come September, one of those fun 1960's era movies starring Rock Hudson, Gina Lolabrigida, Bobby Darin, and Sandra Dee, the latter two who met on the set of the movie. It is set on the Italian coast with many scenes of Rome as well. Very fun!

beaupeep Aug 14th, 2006 04:26 AM

Until September with Karen Allen and Thierry Lhermitte but it isn't about the War Years. It's about a single American girl who gets separated from her tour group and gets stranded in Paris and has a romance with a neighbor (she is staying in a former schoolmate's apartment whom she hasn't seen for years). Great scenery of Paris. And Thierry.....

ma23peas Aug 14th, 2006 04:43 AM

beaupeep! Yes and thanks to the other poster that gave his name...what a smooth operator (French actor Thierry)! Loved that film...

Also &quot;Private Benjamin&quot; had some scenes in Europe that were cool...

Forgot to mention &quot;Luther&quot; very good movie on Martin Luther's life set mostly in England.

kswl...will definitely check out I Am David...I have been looking for good WW2 movies before our trip...thank you!!

What was the name of the family who left Berlin in a balloon? Oh! Night Crossing!

The Wilderness Family for cool mountain scenes

Somewhere in Time for cool Makinaw Island scenes

Ladies in Lavender for neat British coast scenes...

Okay, must stop!

I really don't watch that many movies, about 1 a month...but I try to make them &quot;take me somewhere&quot; when life holds me back! :)

olympicgaym Aug 14th, 2006 05:19 AM

Tea with Mussolini,
especially the final scene in San.G. and the ladies(Judy Dench, Lily tomlin, Maggie Smith etc.) tying themselves to protect the towers.
Plus the earlier scenes in Florence and Tuscany.

tcreath Aug 14th, 2006 06:30 AM

My favorites are Before Sunrise and Before Sunset.

I love how Ethan Hawke and Julie Delphi's characters meet on a train going to Vienna and then decide to spend the day and night there before he has to catch his flight back to the US. Seeing all of the sights in Vienna and Paris make me long to visit the cities all over again.

pat Aug 14th, 2006 08:24 AM

interesting to see Thierry I`Hermite in Until September, and then see him in Le Divorce, filmed many years later.

Underhill Aug 14th, 2006 08:26 AM

Sorry! &quot;Until September&quot; isn't the film I wasn't thinking about, and now I can't remember the name. It had to do with a young French-woman student who was fleeing Paris at the start of the Nazi occupation, accompanied by her scientist mentor--and several large containers of heavy water. Fine cast.

Anyone have the name?

Viajero2 Aug 14th, 2006 08:33 AM

Sorry tonianyc, but &quot; The Motorcycle Diaries&quot; has nothing to do with Mexico whatsoever....! It is based on Che Guevara's road trip around Argentina, Peru and Chile, filmed entirely on locations. I do agree as far as travel film is a WOW!

kerouac Aug 14th, 2006 08:44 AM

Underhill, you were thinking of &quot;Bon Voyage&quot; with Virginie Ledoyen, Gr&eacute;gori D&eacute;rang&egrave;re, Isabelle Adjani and G&eacute;rard D&eacute;pardieu, among others.

kerouac Aug 14th, 2006 08:46 AM

But, uh, Thierry Lhermitte wasn't in it.

samsmom1127 Aug 14th, 2006 09:03 AM

Great list! I guess I'm heading to the video store! I'll add my votes for Enchanted April, A Room With a View and Out of Africa as well.

cigalechanta Aug 14th, 2006 09:05 AM

Provence-Pagnol's Fanny Trilogy,

London- Blow-up and A Touch of Class,

Greece-Never on Sunday,

The Lord of the Rings trilogy

The Secret of Roan Inish

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

March of the Penguins

Cimbrone Aug 14th, 2006 09:35 AM

Does anyone remember &quot;A Little Romance&quot; from the early 80's? With Diane Lane and Lawrence Olivier? Two teenage lovers have to get from Paris to Venice to kiss under the bridge of sighs at sunset in order to make sure their love is eternal?

Also &quot; The Comfort of Strangers&quot; with Rupert Everett, Helen Mirren and Christopher Walken. Beautiful and creepy and oh so Venice! If you've never seen it, you must do so NOW!!

cigalechanta Aug 14th, 2006 09:41 AM

Likewise for &quot;Don't look now&quot; with Donald Suderland and Julie Christie.
Another film making Venice creepy!

laughingd2 Aug 14th, 2006 10:57 AM

Passport to Paris with the Olsen Twins. Seriously, give it a shot. Great scenes of Paris.

kerouac Aug 14th, 2006 11:57 AM

A lot of people seem to just be listing foreign movies instead of travel movies.

Michel_Paris Aug 14th, 2006 12:11 PM

A couple of Pagnol two parters, very nice views of southern France, and very good stories..

Manon des Sources
Jean de Florette

and

La gloire de mon pere (My father's glory)
Le Chateau de Ma Mere (My mother's castle)

Underhill Aug 14th, 2006 01:11 PM

He certainly wasn't, although I wish he had been--along with Jean Reno.

Underhill Aug 14th, 2006 01:12 PM

Many thanks, Kerouac--it was a film I'd recorded off the air and so had no record of it once we watched it.

Travelbug13 Sep 6th, 2006 11:50 AM

An interesting river cruise movie: Apocalypse Now.

For ocean cruise fans: Monkey Business and A Night at the Opera.

brando Sep 6th, 2006 08:02 PM

Any title from the national lampoons vactions series- they always crack me up. Seriously roman holiday is pretty damn cool.

jgg Sep 6th, 2006 08:47 PM

Thanks to Travelbug for reviving this thread, I must have missed it the first time. Great suggestions for our trip in March to Barcelona and Morocco. We just watched &quot;Little Manhattan&quot; with great scenes of NYC and it reminded me of &quot;A Little Romance&quot; but I didn't remember that it took place in Paris and Venice - now I must rent it!

CheBird Sep 7th, 2006 06:24 AM

Romancing the Stone. My trip to Machu Picchu wasn't that far off from the movie. Very adventerous, romantic and even ended up a little dangerous.

Rosiegirl Sep 7th, 2006 06:39 AM

Does anyone remember the movie &quot; The Red Balloon?&quot; About the little boy in Montmartre and the balloon that follows him.
