I think it might be helpful if each poster who has a specific question about their travel plans and the strike (i.e., needs help with an alternative transportation route, etc.) posts on a new thread with a better title. Mention GAC in the title too, he/she is the Italian transportation guru of the boards.

We were in Italy in April and there was supposed to be a rail strike, but it was postponed they said until May. However, the info we received at the station regarding strikes is that the trains usually run early in the morning. The strike goes into effect on the shift change. So if you must travel by train and there is a strike it is suggested to arrive at the station and get a very early train. However, if you are having to change trains along the way, guess you are stuck. What a mess. The only upside is that there is a time limit as was noted by Rosemary. Not much comfort but better than a month long strike. I would try to get a private driver if budget allows. Happy travels!

Since the strike date is past and I just now noticed that (sorry) what happened with you travelers in Italy during that time?

Mimipam, the last I heard the strike was scheduled for 5/31 and is still on as far as I know. I'm flying out of Rome to Milan in order to get to Bevano that day.

We took longer rides the days before and after the strike last week, and the trains weren't nearly as crowded as I thought they'd be. We also took a short little ride the day of the strike (Monterosso to Vernazza), and they just made announcements at the station about which were cancelled and which were running.

We are training from Milan to Rome on May 31 - I have a Eurostar ticketless reservation for 11 a.m. Can you make any suggestions for what we should do as an alternative? Thanks

To corrigjk: The May 31 strike should have no effect on your long-haul train, it is a strike of local public transportation only.

Per another post Italy aircontrollers (and evidently other airline workers) will be on strike May 28th from 10:00 am to 6:00pm Italian time.

Also, the railtracks between Rome and Naples has been closed as a WWII 500 pound bomb was found halfwaw between Rome and Naples near the railtracks. Last I read the railtracks will be opened up for train travel this coming Monday.

Lots of confusing travel issues in Italy right now.
