Possible to upgrade a swiss pass?

I'm wondering if it is possible to purchase a 2nd class swiss rail pass (8 day) and then upgrade it to 1st class a couple of days later? Or are you stuck wiith 2nd class once you buy it?

Hi LSUvetgirl,

We used to be able to upgrade a pass for a train ride; we'd just pay the difference for that one ride. Unfortunately, I can't find that info anywhere online, not at www.rail.ch, nor at www.swisstravelsystem.ch, nor at www.swisstravelsystem.com. I suggest you go to the Swiss Rail site at www.rail.ch and e-mail them to be sure.

Good luck!

Yes, it is absolutely possible to buy either an upgrade for a certain journey (the price difference between 1st and 2nd class) or for an entire day. I think the latter costs about 35-40 Fr.

Great; that makes planning a lot easier. thanks!
Do you do this on the train itself (i.e. just get on first class, and give the conductor the extra money) or do you have to do it at a ticket desk in advance of boarding?

You don't have to go to the ticket desk, but buying any ticket from the conductor costs about 5 Fr extra. The day upgrade can be bought from the ticket machines without waiting time, while the ticket desks have often lines where you may have to wait up to 15-20 min. I assume you can also buy single upgrades from the machines too, but I haven't done that.
