ha, you are psychic, Beatchick.

It was Ohio.

I was born in Athens and spent a lot of my childhood in Defiance and Delaware.

:)

I wonder where you live now, Christina? For quite some time, I thought you lived permanently in Paris - you seem to know so much about it.

Patricia,

Any luck with the address? Or directions? I really appreciate your help.

Cigalechanta,
Your W.H. Davies poem was beautiful. Thank you.

Underhill, would it be practical to mail the young man a six pack of root beer? Just a thought.

Underhill Jun 24th, 2004 07:56 PM

Probably a bit costly--that's why I'm going to have the make-your-own kit sent instead, as it has everything but the liquid and the bottles and so should be fairly light. I guess we'll just take 2 cans with, unless I find out that carbonated beverages won't travel well in the hold. Arriving with root beer all over everything in the suitcase would not be a good idea.

If France had root beer they'd call it Sarsparilla.

twoflower Jun 24th, 2004 09:26 PM

Gotta disagree with you m_Kingdom2.
In real world common usage, liquor refers to alcoholic beverages. Liqueur is a particular class of liquor. Non-alcoholic beverages are just that. Liquid is anything wet!

subcon Jun 25th, 2004 02:51 AM

while i hate to support flagrant pedantry and outright rudeness, mkingdom is correct.

"liquor" is the essence derived of any reduction done of boiling down (which includes distillation). thus, fish stock is indeed a "liquor" as would be liquified chocolate.

distilled spirits are nominally liquor whether the distillate is derived of barley, potatoes etc. beer and wine are not liquor since the operative process is fermentation. cognac is a result of the combination of the two. liqueur is a subset of distilled spirits or "liquor".

Underhill: An article in today's "Bonjour Paris" titled "Happily Homesick" lists a website for the Thanksgiving store: www.thanksgivingparis.com/store.htm

You'll find that, in the list of available foods, they do carry both root beer and Dr. Pepper.

Underhill Jun 27th, 2004 07:58 AM

Thanks, Croque Madame. The problem is that we won't be in Paris before our stay in Provence, where our friends live. But perhaps the store can ship--that would be good solution.

sherry1 Jun 27th, 2004 08:47 AM

Thanks for the Thanksgiving link. For sure one can get CRUNCHY peanut butter there!

Underhill Jun 27th, 2004 11:12 AM

Thanksgiving doesn't ship, alas.

Underhill:

I haven't been able to find anything on the store in Aix...some friends of mine who live there think it's gone out of business, but aren't sure.

There is a newer store in St.Remy (behind the Intermarche) called "Best of British". They carry quite a few "things American" but I haven't had a chance to go by and see if that includes root beer. If I get there tomorrow or Tuesday I"ll let you know here !

Patricia

Underhill Jun 27th, 2004 07:57 PM

Thanks, Patricia.

twoflower Jun 27th, 2004 09:11 PM

Liquor non-alcoholic? Maybe that's the go in some parts of the world, subcon, but not in most.

PBProvence Jun 27th, 2004 11:24 PM

Underhill:

Success ! Root beer is available at the
Paradox Book Store ( don't ask)
on the rue du 4 septembre,
just off the Cours Mirabeau in
Aix.

They're closed on Mondays.

Best of British apparently has the food section there, but they don't carry root beer here in the St Remy shop - just Dr. Pepper.
