Possible London GTG between April 28/May1

At the end of my Battle of the Bulge exploration/Amsterdam trip i finish up w/ 4 nights in London. Maybe a GTG . . . Maybe at the Grapes . . . Maybe a Sir Ian sighting??!

(I'm also in London one night April 20 staying at the st Pancras Ren. Before taking the Eurostar the next morning)

texasbookworm Apr 7th, 2015 05:13 PM

Sad face-won't be there until June 1!

julia_t Apr 7th, 2015 11:14 PM

Sad face as well - I shall be in France, exploring the Dordogne that week.

Enjoy your trip, and hope you can find someone to join you at the Grapes.

PatrickLondon Apr 8th, 2015 01:27 AM

I'll be around then, on present form.

welltraveledbrit Apr 14th, 2015 01:31 AM

Sounds like it would work for me, are you still leaning towards April 28th?
You can always contact me on my blog

janisj Apr 14th, 2015 08:33 AM

It seems like the 28th will be best (the only day jamikins can make it.)

from your other thread, maybe northie can also join us.

Looks like possibles include:
PatrickLondon
jamikins
Bikerscott
welltraveledbrit
wtb spouse (?)
northie
me

The Grapes works for me - but any other ideas? I'm open to most any part of town.

I fly into LGW earlier that day but no jetlag involved so any time after maybe 6PM is doable.

janisj Apr 15th, 2015 09:21 AM

OK -- because we're arriving from so many different directions, someplace a bit more central than the Grapes might be better. The Golden Fleece in Queen Street (off Cheapside) has been suggested. Convenient to tube/DLR/trains and the menu looks like something for anyone.

Anyone else in town on Mon the 28th? We can book a table -- maybe 6:15-6:30-ish

janisj Apr 15th, 2015 09:22 AM

oops TUESDAY, the 28th . . . .

northie Apr 15th, 2015 05:01 PM

I like the Golden Fleece better . I can come on the bus. I presume my husband can come???

janisj Apr 15th, 2015 05:44 PM

Sure -- the more the merrier :)

I will be with you in sprit.

janisj Apr 17th, 2015 03:35 PM

Going to book a table at the Golden Fleece - what time is good for everyone. Does 6:30 work - earlier? later?

(annhig -- just figured you'd had lots of spirits ;) )

tower Apr 17th, 2015 05:35 PM

janis...were you successful in findng any further details on your dad's hitch in Begium? Hope so. Have a sweet trip!

Stu

janisj Apr 17th, 2015 05:46 PM

Yes -- a fair bit. :)

I have Henri Mignon for an entire day - he's going to drive me around the Bulge area and we'll visit the village where my Dad's platoon was under siege.

One little hiccup though . . . I'm staying Tuesday night in Brugge and taking the train to far SE Belgium Wed mid-morning . . . EXCEPT there is a country-wide one-day rail strike on Wed. :O No way to get there. And my hotel in Brugge is booked solid Wed night. I rang them up this morning to see if I could get a room -- no, but we did agree that w/ the trains down they may get a cancellation or two. If they can't accommodate me they'll find me a room somewhere. Will eventually get down there but it may not be til Thurs afternoon/evening

Good luck//this is most vicarious for this old soldier/

dutyfree Apr 17th, 2015 08:42 PM

Darn-just got back from working London this past Weds. and don't have any more London trips this month. I would have enjoyed meeting everyone!

janisj Apr 18th, 2015 06:51 AM

there'll be other chances dutyfree. There are GTGs in London every few months.

Update: Currently can't book a table because the pub's system/interface w/ opentable is down and they are closed on weekends so can't ring them up.

We'll book during the week. The Golden Fleece @ 6:30PM April 28 - party of 8 (if anyone else can join us, just post here and we can update the booking.

See you all Tuesday week . . .

janisj Apr 20th, 2015 06:30 AM

Just received an email from jamikins and the table is booked. 6:30 the 28th (posted from my UPGRADED suite at the St Pancras Renaissance I didn't pay for a suite or even close) - this place is bleedin' fantastic!

northie Apr 20th, 2015 03:53 PM

janisj the areas in Belgium and France will be full of Aussies. Enormous remembrances April 25 ANZAC day-100 years since the start of WW1 -in Australia ,UK Turkey France and Belgium.
Hope your time with your dad is wonderful.

Challiman Apr 20th, 2015 04:10 PM

I won't be there til May 6, but I am interested in Janisj Battle of the Bulge exploration. A few years ago DH and I spent two days with a fantastic guide there. We stayed overnight in Bastogne.
How did you explore?

welltraveledbrit Apr 21st, 2015 01:07 AM

Janisj and jamikins, thanks for taking care of the arrangements and see you there.

northie Apr 21st, 2015 02:40 AM

Janisj - please add one more to the booking - Lady B.

RM67 Apr 21st, 2015 02:41 AM

I envy you the Renaissance Janis!

annhig Apr 21st, 2015 05:36 AM

A suite? well, there's posh.

janisj Apr 21st, 2015 07:58 AM

Annhig - you don't know the half of it. My goodness what a great room, and the service was unbelievable. I'll post details in my TR

. . . Posted from my MUCH more down market 2nd floor (3rd floor American) walk up in Brugge ;) . . .

northie Apr 26th, 2015 01:56 AM

Apologies - I must think I'm a time traveller . I had us arriving at LHR Monday and then just realized today when ordering airline meals that we leave Australia Monday and arrive Tuesday afternoon. So after 21 hours flying I won't be in a fit state nor be on time to join the GTG. Apologies - hopefully it's my only mistake this trip!

Challiman Apr 26th, 2015 03:40 AM

janisj, I am sure your visit to the Battle of the Bulge sites will be most interesting. DH and I hired a guide for two days and felt like we got a very good understanding of how the battle went. Our guide was Martin King, who has become sort of famous, but not at the time we went. We stayed overnight in Bastogne. We had no family members at that particular battle but we had a couple of older friends who did and we took about a million photos for them.
I am sorry to miss the GTG but don't arrive til May 6. There will be so much going on in London at that time, should be very exciting.

janisj Apr 26th, 2015 07:59 AM

Northie: that's too bad ( but I know how 'things' get confused - somehow I am getting 2 extra days in London . . . Long story). We'll miss you. Maybe we'll haul some strangers in off the street to make up the rest of our party.

Challiman: my battle fields tour was on Friday. I used Henri Mignon who was a 9 yo living near Bastogne during the battle. A really lovely man. His father was killed by schrappnel. We had a great day out and found the exact farm where my dad was for four nights during the heaviest fighting. The blogs are all new but it is still a farm.

janisj Apr 26th, 2015 08:21 AM

Just a thought . . . Because of my two 'extra days' (don't ask >) ). Maybe we can get together later in the week/weekend. I'm off line most of tomorrow but will be in London from Tuesday noon-ish w/ wifi access - maybe we can touch bases after you recover.

northie Apr 26th, 2015 10:24 PM

That would be great . I'm free Wednesday and Thursday - off to Brighton on Friday

janisj Apr 28th, 2015 05:52 AM

Back on line and ensconced in my TEEEEENSY 'studio' in Ebury Street. But lovely bathroom .

Northie - I think you are traveling today or just arriving?? If you see this, I'm totally booked up on Thursday but can definitely manage something on Wednesday. I'm booked into the Sargent exhibition Wed morning at the national portrait and was going to hit TKTS after that to see what's available. So Wed. - lunch or afternoon tea or pre-dinner drinks or ? Where are you staying?

northie Apr 28th, 2015 02:28 PM

janisj - I could meet you outside the portrait gallery at 1 or even book at the restaurant there . They have vacancies. We are in Muswell Hiil this week.

janisj Apr 28th, 2015 11:09 PM

Ooh - lunch at the Portrait would be lovely. 1:00 is perfect. I'll try to book right now . . .

We had a wonderful GTG last night more details later since I'm running a little late. we talked for HOURS . . .

northie Apr 28th, 2015 11:23 PM

Ok let me if we get in and dh and I will meet you in there

janisj Apr 28th, 2015 11:25 PM

Northie: I just tried to book and it can't be done on-line w/o a mobile # and I don't have one w/ me. Tried ringing and its too early. There is a slot at 1:45 but I won't have access to a phone after I head out in about 45 mins.

If you see this could you book it?

Successful or not we could meet at the Portrait then and either eat in the restaurant or pop into the cafe???

I may not see your reply one way or the other . . . Fingers crossed :)

janisj Apr 28th, 2015 11:26 PM

We were posting at the same time :)

Ok - you book and ill see you there . . .

northie Apr 29th, 2015 12:15 AM

Booked 1.45 table!

PalenQ May 8th, 2015 09:27 AM
