What a tragedy . . .

It seems pretty clear the whole thing was a pretense and I fear for all moderates in Turkey. otherchelebi, I can't imagine what you are going through.

I was in the very early stages of planning a trip to Turkey early next Fall. Sorry but it ain't gonna happen. The country is officially off my list unless/until . . .

Stay safe OC. My heart goes out to your beautiful country and welcoming countrymen, this looks like one of the Stalinist purges...:(

FranknSense Jul 19th, 2016 03:32 AM

The purge continues, 8000 have been arrested. Good thing Turkey is part of NATO. If this were going on in Iran or Russia, our administration would be crying bloody murder. Instead, these will be justified imprisonments and deserved executions

fyi- Turkey has deployed thousands of troops to Istanbul. They are concerned about missing helicopters, and these troops have orders to shoot down any copter without warning. There are as many as 42 'renegade' copters

The Turks have managed to lose their fleet.

They have also suspended thousands of teachers & lecturers.

Lets hope this isnt an Islam Pol Pot echo where anyone with a smattering of a Western education will suffer their end in killing fields

Remember evil hearted Ottomans murdered millions of Armenians simply for the crime of being Christian

"Remember evil hearted Ottomans murdered millions of Armenians simply for the crime of being Christian"

Very much like saying, "Evil minded Americans murdered millions of American Indians for not being Christian)

Rather mixed up about cause and effect, just like the Islamic fundamentalists, I guess.

dotheboysshall, Here's one of my earlier tweets :

Turkey must have plan to import command level #mercenary and/or Islamist soldiers to fill depleted ranks of the military. Good opportunity.

and one more :

#Turkey : #49K Gov. employees fired. Is this an attempt to meet annual national budget or to bring in unemployed youth for training?

for those who like Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope.

OC: I read somewhere all academics are being ordered to remain in Turkey or to return to Turkey if they're abroad. Is this true?

Be safe, dear OC!

otherchelebi Jul 20th, 2016 05:05 AM

thanks kleeblatt,
Waking up in Chicago, this is what I read also.

I am not an academician but a part-time lecturer, so it does not apply to me.
On the other hand, nothing is certain.

In any case, we have to go back to put things in order, if for nothing else.

Thought this discussion on the coup and the after-effects worth hearing:

Sorry to dredge up a weeks old thread, but I wanted to say Turkish Air somehow managed to rearrange our flight. The coup happened on Friday, and we flew out Saturday pretty much on schedule, on a non-stop Air France flight to Paris.

We received emails Saturday from someone at Turkish Air indicating perhaps we were on an Air France flight that day, and realized we better get to the airport. Never have I gone to the airport without a clear idea of what airline I'd be flying on. It was surreal.

We flew back home on Turkish Air and spent the night in Istanbul Saturday night. It was a quick visit, but everything appeared calm.

So all in all, I'm pretty impressed with an airline that I had assumed was overwhelmed on a good day, much less during a coup.
