Lest there be any confusion Sorrento is not a mid-sized city (Boston would qualify as a mid sized city) - it is a town and not a particularly large one. But Positano is considerably smaller - could best be described as a village in size and feel. And Sorrento is not flat, but fairly hilly - just not nearly as hilly as Positano - which is built into the side of a mountain.

I echo what Grasshopper said, that while both places certainly have plenty of tourists, Positano felt to me like a place that's overwhelmingly there for tourists, whereas Sorrento felt more like a "real" Italian town where, as she noted, Italians work in industries unrelated to tourism.
That's not to say a place that is overwhelmingly there for tourists is bad, of course. Venice is very much that way, yet I find it to be a fascinating, beautiful, and romantic city.
Sorrento is an attractive town, but Positano is dramatically picturesque, the way the houses appear to cling to the Amalfi coast cliffs.

Amrach - the answer to your question about the beaches is a qualified "yes." Neither Sorrento nor Positano has a beach to rave about. The beach in Positano is fairly long, but it is a pebble beach, not sand. Sorrento has a couple of private sandy beaches which for a nominal fee (I think less than 5 Euro) you can either pick a spot on the narrow sandy strip or out on the concrete breakwater about 300 feet off-shore. Both the Sorrento beach and the Positano beach have many motorboats coming in fairly close to where people are swimming. If you are looking for a beach vacation, I don't think either location is ideal. I might head further down the coast to Tropea in Calabria instead.

the water near Positano is very clean inspite of all the boats that are docking near the beach. Look into hotel l'Ancora in Positano. It should be about $250 in July and the views from the hotel are breathtaking. It is a sister hotel of Covo de Sarceni, so you can use their pool if you so desire. We never used the pool though because we swam in the sea.
