Positano transportation questions
 

Is there an orange bus that takes you from the beach to the main road in Positano? Cost? How often does it run? How long does it take? Hours of operation? I am wondering about the hike up in the summer heat.

The orange bus goes from Positano to Praiano on the Amalfi Road, it has two stops in Positano and neither are near the beach, you will have to walk down the path or the street to get to the beach. It is not expensive, runs about hourly and stops in the evening. It makes stops along the way but all are on the Amalfi Drive, except in Praiano where it climbs up the hill and circles around.
It is a hike down to the beach in Positano, but where are you starting from? Hotels have shuttles sometimes and there are hotels spaced along the paths, so you may not be at the top, there is also parking about halfway down the inner road towards the beach.
It's not like you are hiking on a path, there are shops and cafes and it is a regular little town.

There is a mini-bus that runs from the bus stop on the main road, to about mid way down the hill. The road does not go all the way down to the beach, so you have to walk down a path to get to the beach. The bus starts its run about 8.00 am, but I do not know what time it stops in the evening. If you have luggage you can arrange for a porter to meet you at the bus stop, but they charge quite a lot. But take my word for it, when there is no bus early in the morning, I would have paid anything rather than carry bags up to the main road. The bus is very inexpensive. It is about a ten minute walk to the mini-bus stop, and a further 5 minutes to reach the main road in the mini-bus.

Although Positano is steep, it is the most wonderful place to spend a few days. Enjoy! Hope this helps

The 'Positano Interno' circular service runs very frequently (about every 10 mins) in summer, and runs till late.

The ornage bus has two stops in Positano. One at the bottom, *near* the beach, and one up on the Coast road. Your hotel will show you where the buses stop.

Thank you all. I will be staying at the Villa Rosa hotel for 4 nights. We plan on walking down hill and hoping to catch the mini bus uphill. I would like to catch the ferry to Amalfi and bus back to Positano one day as well as take day trips up to Montepertuso(Donna Rosa, Il Rirovo, La Tagliata Restaurants) and perhaps hike down from there after lunch. I'm just worried about the heat and humidity. We were in Europe last summer during the great heat wave. Mille Grazie for all your great advice!

We are planning to stay in Positano in March for 1 week (at a timeshare). How is the transportation to Naples? Is there train service to the area?
Do you recommend spending a week in that area when you only have 2 weeks in Italy?

This is getting confusing, the two stops of the mini orange bus in Positano are 1-right on the Amalfi Drive and 2-on the one way road that winds around town and ends up t the stop on the little square before going up again to Amalfi Drive.
From this stop you walk on path through town and some stairs which leads you to the beach. There are other stair ways too, but the easiest way is to take the paths with the shops which passes the church on the way down.
I think you have it pictured different than it is, which is easy to do of course.
I have looked for a map of the town itself to show you but I cant find any on line, maybe someone else knows.

I have stayed at Villa Franca for instance and it has a shuttle van which takes you down to the square, but that is as far as the street goes.

You get to Naples from Positano by taking the SITA bus to Sorrento and Circumvesuviana train into the city.

March is sort of early for the AC. If this is your first trip to Italy, I suggest you limit the AC to 4 days 3 nights.

SeaUrchin - the orange bus runs a circular route up the hill and dowm viale Pasitea. It makes frequent stops along the way.

At the top of the hill - Rte 136 and viale Pasitea are a small market, a bar/cafe and a restaurant. They are freequented by locals and we found them to be the only place in Positano to truly socialize in a not tourist environment.

Your pictures are wonderful! Where were you staying? We are thinking about Villa Frana in September for 3 to 6 nights. Can't decide if we want to stay all 6 nights in Positano or split with Sorrento. Natalie, how did you like Villa Frana?

Thanks for the compliments, I was trying out a new camera. On that trip I was staying at a house down the coast and used sita and orange local busses to get around.
When I stayed on another trip at the Villa Franca I really loved it, the views in the annex where I stayed is overlooking the town and the sea which I liked better than just looking at the black sea at night. The lights of the town are so beautiful it can bring tears to your eyes to sit on the little porch outside the french doors to the rooms there. They have the shuttle van to drive you down the hill to the last plaza stop, or anywhere along the way really.
