Positano to Naples???
I was wondering if there is a direct ferry from Positano to Naples. I know that there is a train that I can use. I thought maybe taking a ferry is much better transportation. Any advice will be appreciated.

We took a direct hydrofoil from Positano to Naples. If I remember correctly, there were about 2 direct ones a day...others may go to Naples with a stop in Sorrento. This was in May of 2003. I think the frequency of the ferries may depend on the time of the year.
Just go to the marina in Positano and there are little booths set up with all the ferry/hydrofoil info. You can buy your tickets there...
Have a wonderful time! It is such a beautiful place!

Can you tell I don't want to work today?
I don't know if you can book a ferry in advance. You may be able to do it once you get there for when you want to leave. But I don't think space will be an issue and we were able to buy the tkts the morning we wanted to leave.
Writing about my trip to you made me nostalgic-- we went in May of last year for our honeymoon. I pulled my old trip report which I posted here and found some more specifics for ya-- the direct to Naples hydrofoils left at noon and 5:30pm each day and cost 10E per person. I believe it took somewhere between 1 and 2 hours. Hydrofoil is obviously faster than the regular ferry. Again, the frequency of the ferries.hydrofoils may vary by the season.
Hope that helps!

You have plenty of time to finalize your trip but it sounds like very fun "girls trip!"
We stayed at the Hotel Ancora and loved it. The location was great, very friendly staff, and large rooms with beautiful views.

If you have time, I'd recommend a stay in Capri. Also, ask your hotel in Positano about the restaurants up in Monteperuso (sp?). We went to 2- La Tragliatara (sp?) and Il Ritrova (sp?). They'll send down a complimentary car for you and take you up high up in the mountains to the town. We had wonderful meals at both restaurants!

You will also need porters if you have luggage. Hotel l'Ancora is about 150 steps away from the marina in Positano; I don't think you want to carry your own luggage down those steep steps. And btw, there is no train from Naples to Positano. There is a train from Naples to Sorrento and then you have to take a SITA bus. The other option would be to hire a driver for about 90 Euro.

I just got back from a trip that included a 3-night stay in Positano. We took the Metro del Mare hydrofoil from Naples to Positano, and then back again when we left.
The Metro del Mare website has the timetables for the hydrofoil service between Naples (Molo Beverello port) and Positano. When we arrived at the Naples airport, we took the bus to Molo Beverello and bought our tickets at the Metro del Mare window.
http://www.metrodelmare.com/inglese/home.htm
From Naples to Positano, I think there are 2 departures for the direct route (MM2?), and a couple more for the indirect one with 2 stops (MM3?). We left Naples at 2:15pm and stopped twice, once at Torre Annunziata and again at Sorrento, but the trip didn't seem very long at all with so much fantastic scenery to look at along the way.
There are also several times for the service from Positano back to Naples. IIRC, the last hydrofoil leaving Positano for Naples was around 6-7pm. We took one of the last ones and I don't remember it stopping at all, although my memory could be faulty b/c I was so despondent about leaving Positano.
As far as where to stay in Positano, I can highly recommend the Villa La Tartana. It was lovely and not a very long walk from the dock. We had a room on the top floor (3d or 4th?) and our view from our balcony was pretty spectacular.
The only drawback is that there is no lift and there is a *lot* of stairs, but then again, if you have a problem with stairs, you probably won't want to visit Positano at all.
We also visited La Sirenuse and the Hotel Poseideon just for drinks at their respective bars, and they both seemed very nice, but were out of our price range. I think Villa La Tartana is about as inexpensive as it gets in Positano.

Follow-up: I forgot to mention that the Metro del Mare hydrofoil service between Naples and Positano costs exactly 8 euros per person, one way. It's a great way to arrive in Positano via water, because it's really the best way to appreciate the beauty of the place.

Boat services change from day to day and from week to week. You should make enquiries on the spot to find what is running. There are no boats from Positano in winter, and they are liable to be cancelled any day if the sea is too rough. The fast craft are of various types, including catamarans and hydrofoils. Some have an open deck so you can see the scenery. For other operators, try www.navlib.it and www.alilauro.it.
