Positano/Ravello Hotel Help

I recently read Kiki's review of Villa La Tartana, Villa Rosa, and L'Ancora. Between the 3 which one is best. I really want to find a website for L'Ancora....I have not been able to locate one. Help! There is a possiblity of staying at the Hotel Rufolo in Ravello. We are going to be in the Positano area Sept. 9-12 everything is booked up this is why I am having a hard time making reservations. I am down to these 3 hotels. We are coming in from Rome and don't know if we should just stay in Positano or make the trek to Ravello...I don't know how far it is away? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!

I've never been to Italy before, but am headed in a few weeks for my honeymoon. We wanted to stay at the San Pietro in Positano - but it was booked. Someone suggested to us the Santa Catarina hotel outside Amalfi. It looks and seems incredible! (although pricey) You can check out their website at: www.hotelsantacaterina.it.
Good luck!

Hi, Nancy. I have not stayed in Positana, but I did stay at Hotel Rufolo, and I highly recommend it. For me it was one of the better price to quality ratios I have experienced (I paid about $100 a night for a single two years ago).

Advantages of Ravello: less touristy, incredible silence at night, knock-down, dropdead views. Disadvantages: it is isolated and can be difficult to access without a car. But taxis and buses are available.

Personally, I love Ravello, and I found Positano a too touristy, although beautiful to visit for the day, and definitely superior restaurants to anywhere else on the Amalfi Coast. (I have also stayed a few times in Amalfi itself, and I like it over Positano.)

Hope this helps.

We traveled by train from Rome to Sorrento. We stayed at the Hotel Minerva in Sorrento. Wonderful sea view balconys of the ocean and coast that must be a mile high. Fax 081-878-1949. After 3 days we were off to Ravello for the Hotel Rufulo. We got there by hiring a driver to tour us from Sorrento to Ravello. This took about 4 hours with stops in Positano, Portofino, etc. We recommend Carmine Monetti. He owns a Mercedes (elastic taxi)and the ride is very comfortable. Fax 081-878-4795. About $150 for 2 people. He took us to the Rufulo. A wonderful trip.

I just got back from Positano and loved it! I visited Ravello as well and it is beautiful. It is high above Atrani.
I stayed at the Hotel Miramare and thought it was great. There are some stairs involved getting to the beach and road above, but a porter will help with bags. Ravello is about a 50 minute bus ride from Amalfi and another 20 minutes or so to Ravello from Amalfi

I just returned from my trip to the Amalfi Coast last week. We stayed one night at L'Ancora. It was the best room of the trip, with awesome views for the junior suite. Best of all, they have free parking, so if you are driving in, you can leave your car while you explore. L'Ancora also gives you pool privileges at their sister property, Covo dei Saraceni on the beach, and a discount in their restaurant (which was great).

I did a quick Google search for L'Ancora and found this link for the hotel: http://www.travel-italy.com/hotels/h.../l_ancora.html. It includes photos.

We also stayed in Amalfi, at the Hotel Aurora. It was a 30 minute windy drive from Positano. We drove up the road to Ravello, but didn't stay there. It was another 20 minutes or so beyond Amalfi. We did get a 32 euro parking ticket there, however! I'd day trip to Ravello and stay in Amalfi.

Hi Nancy,

Since you have 3 nites in the Positano area, I suggest either 2 nites in Positano and 1 nite in Ravello, or all 3 nites in Positano. If you look at a map of the Amalfi region, Positano is centrally located to visit the towns of Amalfi and Ravello, and to see Capri. Positano was much prettier than Amalfi and nicer shops than Amalfi. And Positano at night is just magical. I wish that we had stayed later one night in Ravello and taken a cab back so as to take that town in at night, listen to a concert, etc.

It also depends if you like to stay put or don't mind hotel hopping. If you want to stay put, stay in Positano. You can take the boat to Amalfi right in the morning, walk around Amalfi, and then take the first bus up at 11 am to Ravello and stay the whole day, have dinner there and take a cab back to Positano. On your second day, you can take the boat to Capri early in the morning, come back late afternoon, and enjoy Positano at night, since most of the shops are open late. On your third day, just relax in Positano, and then head back.

L'Ancora is a little pricier than Villa Rosa, but both give you that glorious view of Positano at night. The benefit of Villa La Tartana was that you are near the boats, so in the morning it is a 2 minute walk to catch the boat to Amalfi or Capri. But my first choice would be to see the view at Villa Rosa or L'Ancora.

Have a great time!
