positano question
Hi everyone,
I am staying in Sorrento and will be traveling by bus to Positano. I know that the bus drops you off at the top of the town.I know that it is very hilly and that you will be climbing up and down alot of stairs. My question is: If we start at the top of the town and work our way down to the beach do we have to walk ALL the way back up to the bus stop to go to Amalfi or can we catch a bus at the bottom of the town that will take us up to the bus stop at the top of the town? I hope this is not too confusing. I did read that the road to amalfi was closed. Is it still closed? We will be there in about 3 weeks. If the road to Amalfi is closed I suppose I can take a ferry to Amalfi or back to Sorrento. Right? Thanks for your help!! Kathy |
The buses are available. Rent a scooter. I just returned from Positano, the streets were steep and the steps even steeper. Lovely walk but if you can't make it, take the bus or rent a scooter. Have a great time. I grieve that I have left.
Keep in touch, I'd love to hear about your experience there. Katja |
There are 2 bus stops for Positano. Coming from Sorrento, stop at the second stop and you will be closer to the shopping area of Positano with less walking down hill.
You can always take a boat back to Sorrento from the base of Positano and skip the walk up hill back to the bus stop. Check the boat schedules when you reach the beach at Positano, have lunch, then return to Sorrento by boat. The views from the water are better than the views from the bus. You can also take a boat from Sorrento to Positano. Enjoy your trip! |
The road is open I was there 2 weeks ago.......and unless you have some mobility problems, the stairs and roads to the top of the town are not that bad, very doable.
Enjoy, Mikek |
Hi NW - It's easier to continue to Amalfi from Positano by ferry than by bus.
There are currently Positano-Amalfi ferries at: 10.00 - 12.00 - 13.30 - 15.30 etc http://www.salernocity.com/comune/tr.../travelmar.asp (- timetables may change next month) You can return from Amalfi to Sorrento by bus, hydrofoil or ferry. Hope this helps ... Steve |
Agree with Steve, boat is an easier way to get in & out of Positano than bus. But to answer your original question, there is a wee orange local bus which does a circular route round Positano & you can get it back up from the piazzetta to the main road where the bus stops for other towns are. It does get very hot & crowded, though, so it can be pleasanter to walk back up.

Thank you for all the good information. This is just what I needed to know. Sorry I have not been able to thank you earlier but I have been in the hospital for the last week. I am praying that I can still go to Italy. I don't want to disappoint my daughter. Thanks again Kathy

Here's wishing you a speedy recovery and great trip. Please report back on your trip. My wife and I will be visiting Sorrento and the surrounding area in late July.

Hope you are feeling better soon. A few years' ago on Steve James advice we took the ferry to Positano and it was glorious. Seeing Positano from the boat was the best!
