Positano or Praiano
 

We will be celebrating our 40th anniversary next May and plan to go to the Amalfi Coast. We are torn between staying at the Onda Verde in Praiano OR the Poseidon in Positano.What might be the better choice?We will not have a vehicle for that leg of our journey.

Ira will tell you Praiano, but many others will say Positano. Before I chime in, I'd want to know how many days and what do you want to do/see while you're there?

Minx, we spend 2 nights in Sorrento with teens, and saw Ravello, Positano, Praiano, and Amalfi on a day-trip.

If it was my anniversary, and I wanted privacy, a laid-back experience, great seafood, and a tiny adorable beach, I'd choose Praiano.

If I wanted stunning views and wanted some pampering and privacy, I'd choose exquisite Ravello, maybe Villa Cimbrone.

I definitely would NOT stay in Amalfi or Sorrento for my anniversary.

I would choose beautiful Positano if I wanted a lovely town with lots of tempting shopping, and I didn't mind being around lots of other tourists during the day.

Positano has slightly better transportation options for day trips than Praiano. And The Hotel Poseidon is one of my favorite hotels in Europe. It's family-run, with exceptional service (and when we've visited) unbelievable food. The views from some of its rooms ( esp. the jr. suites that face town) and the restaurant terraces are unforgettable. Because of the hotel's location on a road just above town, you feel removed from the throngs of summer tourists. But you're only a few minutes away from some wonderful restaurants and shopping.

If you're interested, I would e-mail the hotel soon, since it can book up quickly once the spring season starts.

I wouldn't recommend Ravello in May - we were there one June & found it a bit chilly in the evenings & in the day time in the shade. Also a bit too quiet - there's really nothing to do except visit the 2 gardens and attend a concert if you're lucky : personally if I'm going to do nothing I'd rather do it on the coast.

Praiano, because of it's postion on the coast, has the best sunsets, and the view of the lights of Positano is very beautiful, although I am not sure if posotion of the Onda Verde allows one to see Positano, because it seems to face out onto the little cove and Marina Praia.

I have just returned from the Amalfi Coast and loved Positano. I did not make it to Praiano other than see it from the road but next time I will certainly be going there as it is small and also very beautiful.

I used public transport for my stay and it was both frequent and efficient. The Sita bus runs along the coast every hour and stops at both Praiano and Positano,the views are breathtaking. However I don't think any ferries stop at Praiano. Either, would IMO, be lovely but if you want the most stunning views then for me it would undoubtly be Ravello.

I was lucky enough to visit a concert and yes it is cooler than the towns on the coast (a godsend in July/August) but the views!! I would recommend the Hotel Rufolo.

Enjoy the Amalfi Coast a truly romantic place to spend your 40th anniversary.

We stayed in Onde Verde last spring and loved it. Praiano is a small quiet town perfectly located on the coast. We did not have a car and had no problems getting the SITA bus just a few mins up the road. The Onde Verde itself is charming but make sure to request a room with a terrace or balcony - all rooms are priced the same, even the rooms without a balcony. The food is excellent, as is the service and there is a cute little beach that you have access to. The views are stunning. Enjoy!

Thankyou everyone for your informative replies.They are of enormous help. The final decision will be made this week as the Poseidon is holding a reservation. We have not heard anything from the Onda Verde despite 2 requests. So may call for availability and prices.I'm wondering if they have an alternate e.mail addy??JEAN,we are going for a 5 night stay.Any input from IRA?...REX?

I think either Positano or Praiano are great. Positano is more of a town with more going on. Praiano is quiet. There are resturants and places to have a drink, but there are very few stores etc. I think the Onda Verde is a nice place, but I think the view from the Tramonto D'Oro in Praiano is better. The Tramonto D'Oro hotel sits higher up the hill side and the views over look Positano. The hotel is on the cliff right on the main road and therefore getting the bus to here and there is very easy, plus you can easily walk (no stairs) to different restaurants etc. The OncerVerde is outside of the town center and down a hill side nearer to the sea shore and near a small beach. Getting to restaurants would require more of an effort. You will have a fabulous time what ever you decide.
