I don't believe I said it made a good base. If one is looking for a stunningly beautiful place that offers enough to do to make vegging out a sheer delight, and one is willing to sacrifice convenience to enjoy such a place, one could do worse.

I am getting a lot of good (overall) vibes from this thread and thanks again to everyone. In terms of our own "vegging" possibilities I am kindof drawn to the idea of doing it around a pool somehow. If it had a better view than mine at home does (which is none at all) even better.

The best pool in Ravello is at the Belmond Caruso. Second best, by a close margin, would be the nearby Palazzo Avino, formerly Palazzo Sasso. Both are heated, which is VERY important on the Amalfi Coast. ( Le Sirenuese is heated, too.)

There are surprisingly few heated pools in that area (believe me, I have looked. And looked.) and if not heated, I could not use them even in late spring or early fall.

I googled Ravello infinity pool and one of the links was TA listing of 5-star hotels, including Belmond Caruso and La Sirenuese.

Holy Cow, Sireneuse wants over $2000 a night in early May. Belmond Caruso was over $530 a night.

At these prices, you really have to spend a lot of time at the pool and availing yourself of the hotel services, maybe not get out that much.

I have been using Fodor's forums for years and have only now joined and hope to offer ideas as so many have offered on this website. My husband and I celebrated our 25th anniversary in Italy a few years ago and spent a glorious 4 days on the Amalfi Coast. We stayed in Praiano and would go back in a heartbeat. As we sat on the balcony of our hotel eating dinner each evening (the Hotel Tramonto D'Oro) we watched the sunsets behind Capri while enjoying the twinkling lights of Positano as the evening progessed. It was pure magic!
For one of the days, we took an all day boat excursion from Amalfi to Capri and back; we had lunch in Capri and swam and enjoyed wine on the boat. There were only 12 of us from all over the world. That was the highlight of the whole trip!

Dukey... if you just want to veg I would chose Ravello. Walking in Positano can be difficult.. lots of stairs. (Plus the beach leaves a lot to be desired). Does your Husbear have any mobility issues? If you plan to visit Capri it is best to spend the night.
