Positano or Amalfi
We are going to Italy next month and I planned months ago for us to stay in Positano
for 4 nights and use it as our base. We are not planning on renting a car, but will most likely use a private driver or taxi. Because of this, I'm wondering if we should stay in Amalfi for 2 nights so we can base there to see Amalfi and Ravello, then go to Positano and stay there 2 nights and use that as our base to see that area and Capri? |
They are very close to each other, so I would suggest staying in one place- Positano.
Consider taking the public boat from Positano to Amalfi. The views are bautiful and it doesn't take long. You can take a bus or taxi from Amalfi to Ravello. |
Pick one and Positano is better located. Here are some pics from last May that you may enjoy. Have fun !

I agree, and Positano tends to be a little cheaper in some ways. They are close enough that hiring a private driver you can have a few day trips and see all the sites with ease.

Thanks everyone! That answers my question! I guess I'll keep our reservations at the Poseidon and we'll hire a private driver for touring.
Bob, LOVED your photos! Thanks so much for sharing! It looks fabulous and now I'm getting very excited! |
I would like to hear the ways in which Positano is cheaper than Amalfi. Thanks!
|
Take the Metro del Mare ferry service from Positano to Amalfi and plan to spend all day in both Amalfi and especially Ravello---take the bus up the hill to Ravello. You will like the Poseidon.

I agree, stay in one place. Positano and Amalfi are so close, it would be silly to move hotels. It's easy to get back and forth in the SITA buses.
I loved staying in Positano, but I also thought Amalfi was very cute and would probably stay there next time. Positano feels more like a resort and Amalfi feels more like a real town with actual people who aren't tourists. Positano has more of the "wow" views that we wanted from our hotel balcony, but they are both picturesque and you can't really go wrong. |
Hi.....we suggest you to overnight in Praiano, a picturesque town situated between Positano and Conca dei Marini. Praiano is less famous than other towns on Amalfi Coast, but it has always beautiful and cheaper than Amalfi or Positano.
In alternative you can stay in Sorrento area, from where you can reach Amalfi coast by bus. For more information, we remain at your disposal DTS Travel - Sorrento |
Thanks so much eveyone....glad we decided to stay in Positano.
Bob, we plan to do exactly what you suggest for our first day there. We have 2 more full days of touring the area and want to go to Capri on the 2nd....do you recommend hiring a tour co. to take us or should we just take the ferry and wing it on our own? We want to see the blue grotto and aren't sure how to go about that. Also, what should we do on our 3rd and last day? I'm thinking we may just tour around Positano and then reserve a couple of hours of relaxation time by the pool. ;-) Any more suggestions on what we shouldn't miss are welcome! Thanks again! Diane |
Hi, we have recenlty plumped the other way for an October stay in Amalfi but we are keen to take boat to Positano. Would be interested to know what boat schedules are like at this time of year. Any info on this would be great and we will be following the responses to Dian's post carefully.

cherly is right - positano feels like a resort and Amalfi feels more like a "real" town. However, Sorrento feels even more like a real town than Amalfi. We really enjoyed staying there. But certainly Positano and Amalfi are the visual highlights of the area (and Ravello).
We took an excursion from our hotel in Sorrento to Capri which included the blue grotto that was wonderful. You can take the regular ferry from any of those towns to Capri, then once there get one of tours that circle the island but we felt our excursion was much more enjoyable (and cheaper). My trip report and photo link is here: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...rful-weeks.cfm |
I will leave Capri to others--it has been since 1988 for us.
Do not miss the images above for inspiration. The Blue Grotto shot is magical. |
Wow Isabel! Your photos are AMAZING! Are you a professional photographer? Absolutely stunning photography! Looks like you had a wonderful trip! Thanks for sharing them with all of us. We will look into doing an excursion for Capri and the blue grotto is a definite MUST! Can't wait!
Thanks everyone! |
If la sirenuse is outside the budget what's the next best hotel to stay in in positano and why?

Great choice to stay at the Poseidon! Super location and views. The Latteria across the street is great for picking up snacks and souvaneir kitchen towels!
