Positano, Italy information, please
 

I'm new to this message board and I'm amazed at the knowledge base of it's users. So I am asking for information on Positano, Italy.

We will be visiting late October and have only made transportation arrangements so far. Could anyone assist with recommendations for accommodtations? Also eating? Sites to see? Also we are hikers, any info on hiking in the Positano area?

First of all, welcome to the board. You'll like it here, I think.

WRT Positano accommodations...there is no shortage of threads with just such recs you can find here. Just use the Search field and type in "Positano" and "hotels".

We stayed a week there last year, and rented an apartment toward the top of the hill for our stay. We really enjoyed it, but I'm not sure how long you're planning to stay.

The "Pathway of the Gods" (sentieri degli dei) is ideal for hiking, but I'm not sure how well the weather will cooperate in late October.

- Da Costantino (- Upper Positano, above Chiesa Nuova)

I was in Positano last Oct. What a beautiful time to visit. Stayed at the Hotel Positano. It was lovely and well located.

Just to add one thing to mr_go's post...if you enjoy hiking, there is a great reference guide to hikes and walks in the area: <i>Sunflower Landscapes of Sorrento, Amalfi and Capri: A Countryside Guide</i> by Julian Tippett. I had trouble finding it when we went, but it appears to be available now on Amazon.

Good point, my lovely spouse. That book was exceptionally well done!

I think you should check out the weather before you begin planning. The weather can be so-so at that time of year.

I appreciate the information on Positano. You all are wonderful, and very travel wise.

I stayed at Villa Rosa and would stay there again. The best part was the balcony (it was larger than the room)and the view. It is an uphill climb from the water to get there and does has many steps to get to the rooms. From Positano, we did day tours to Ravello and Pompeii

Jackie is right. We stayed at Villa Rosa in June and would return in a heartbeat. All rooms (12, I think) have their own terrace and spectacular views. Breakfast is served on your private terrace. It is only a 6 or 7 minute walk to the beach. Our room cost 150 euros a night and was well worth it. The website gives you a really good idea of Villa Rosa www.villarosapositano.it

Welcome to the board! Another vote for Da Costantino. Superb food, awesome views at a fair price. WRT your accommodation it may be better to state your budget. Our neighbours stayed at Villa Rosa and were delighted with it. We stayed at the Brikette Hostel - www.brikette.com. We had a double with private facilities. Room was smallish but very clean and comfortable. Fantastic views from our balcony and the communal terrace. You're probably looking at around &euro;90 in October but I am guessing. There's nothing cheaper I'm afraid. Positano is pricey but worth it.

Oh yes, what to see. The obvious is Pompeii. Very easy from Positano. Bus it to the train station then the train will take you to the entrance.

The Hotel Eden Roc is fabulous. Great service and beautiful rooms with balconies overlooking the ocean. It's an easy walk from the hotel to town. Max's Wine Bar has wonderful food and is a fun experience. Late October is not an ideal time to visit, however. The season pretty much ends by Oct. 1 and some hotels close in mid-October. I would try to go in late September if I were you.

We had a great time at La Tagliata restaurant (mentioned above by Steve James).

The restaurant will send a van to your hotel to take you to the restaurant and back.

We stayed at Posa Posa and were very happy with the hotel.

I would appreciate any information on the following choice of hotels: Hotel Eden Rock, Villa Rosa, or Hotel Miramare.

If you're going to be there a week, you might want to look into renting a small apartment, which is what we're doing in October. Check out summersinitaly.com and italy-rental-villa.com. We have a lovely one bedroom unit in Praiano (with a view of Positano 4 kms. down the road and coast) for 550 euros/week. All e-mails were promptly answered, and arrangements were quite simple. Many great pictures on both sites.

As I posted on your other thread, I recommend the Villa Rosa for your stay in Positano.

I second the previous poster's recommendation for Max's Wine Bar... we enjoyed a table with a glass floor looking down into their wine cellar, and the food and service were supreme.

While staying in the Amalfi Coast, we arranged for a 3-hour boat tour with a fantastic family-run business, Cassiopea (www.cassiopea-positano.com). Maddalena is super friendly and spoke great English, and was really easy to work with as we made our reservations...then she decided to come along with us for the ride and was a terrific tour guide! I think everyone should see the Amalfi Coast, and Positano, from the water.

We stayed at hotel L’Ancora which was beautiful, had a great location and wonderful views. We did, however, have to strong-arm them for the room that we had reserved. We wanted a room with a great view and they stuck us downstairs. Once we got the right room, it was really magnificent.

Positano is a really lovely spot. I'm not familiar with the hiking spots there but it is certainly hilly! We stayed at Le Sereneuse. Very upscale and pretty. They have a wonderful restaurannt there also. Took the ferry to Capri which was also very pretty. A bit crowded but once you get to Ana Capri it is very nice. There are too many shops there but once you can find a residential area it is very nice to explore the streets and back alleys.
