Positano Italy

Does anyone know Positano well? I am looking for a nice romantic spot to propose to my girlfriend.

SeaUrchin Jun 22nd, 2004 03:09 PM

Do you mean an outdoor spot?

If so, how about along the via Positansi L'America near the torre trasita. It is the pathway that rises up from the pier area to the right of the beach if you are facing the sea. There is a nice little stone bench under the trees with the sea and rocks below and Positano in the distance, I would like to be proposed to there.

Thanks SeaUrchin. Is this right in Positano? Any other romantic spots? What about renting a boat and doing it on the water? I want to propose either right before or after dinner.

SeaUrchin Jun 28th, 2004 09:54 PM

Yes it is right in Positano to the right of the main beach.
It depends on what time of year you are planning on proposing on whether you can do it in a boat or not.

I know you can rent small boats in the tourist season, I think that would be a great idea.

Have fun and good luck!

Thanks again, Sea Urchin. Any restaurant recommendations for the big night?

SeaUrchin Jun 29th, 2004 10:09 PM

Well, Ed, since you and I are doing all the planning here, I would like to know what your tastes are. Do you like sophisticated romantic, off the wall romantic, budget romantic, view romantic, etc.

So far we have you proposing on the boat offshore, then coming ashore and going straight to dinner?

OK, let me think, by the way what season is all of this happening? We have to consider weather.

SeaUrchin...I will be in Positano from Aug 26-28. As far as my tastes go, I would like something romantic but not touristy or too extravagant. Also, I'm not sure if I will propose on the water or the via Positansi L'America.

SeaUrchin Jun 29th, 2004 11:01 PM

I'm afraid right in Positano that time of year you won't be able to duck the tourists.

There are those restaurants up in Montepertuso that are romantic and affordable and have a van that will pick you (and other tourists) up in Positano and drive you up the hill.

There are also the hotels in town, but there are the tourist factor with them. How about an hotel with mostly European tourists, like le Agavi down the coast?
www.leagavi.it
Le Saracen is popular with locals too.
And I still like Sponda right in Positano for expensive romantic on Proposal Night, too.

I will keep thinking....

Hi ed,

Pick a clear night when the moon will be out and take the bus to Praiano.

Walk down to the piazza in front of the church. You get a beautiful view of the coast line with Positano twinkling in the foreground and the moon lighting up the water and the Le Sirene islands.

The kids come out to play for about an hour after sunset, so you could have dinner there at La Strada or Le Brace.

I agree with Sea Urchin. For a romantic and affordable dinner, I'd go to one of the restaurants in Montepertuso, which is about 20 min by car from Positano. My personal favorite is IL RITROVO, but Donna Rosa and others in Monterpertuso are also very very good. If you call ahead, you can usually get the restaurant to arrange your pick up and drop off in Positano.

Congratulations, and have a great time!

Why don't you just play it by ear and find your own romantic spot. It is hard to imagine the ever present beauty of Positano until you actually experience it. We stayed at the Hotel California which is not a luxury hotel, but the view from the terrace at sunset under the grapevines growing overhead with the lights twinkling around us was stunning. I'm sure there are hundreds of places just as beautiful.

We had dinner in Montepertuso at one of the restaurants and the food and the view were incredible, but not exactly romantic. Le Sponda at the Sirenuse was a beautiful candle lit restaurant with violins playing and the town and beach visible from the terrace tables. You will find a place on your own!

While the restaurants in Montepertusso serve excellent food, I wouldn't call them romantic. For romance, you can't beat La Sponda at the Sirenuse. As a previous poster said, it is candlelit and has a gorgeous view of the lights of Positano and the sea. There are several tables for two tucked into out of the way corners for privacy.

Anyone know about Lo Guarracino? SeaUrchin? Is that near the pathway you spoke about?

SeaUrchin Jun 30th, 2004 02:42 PM

Here I am Ed. You sound like a wonderful man, paying such attention to your proposal site to make it romantic, more men should follow your example!

Yes, that small place is right on that pathway. It is inexpensive and, really, any place can be romantic when you are in love and in Positano!!

Fornillo Beach is a nice place to sit and propose too, at dusk it would be nice and there is a little bar area at the bottom of the stairs.

So, really, you don't have to spend alot at Sponda, but there is where I would choose for a splurge.

ed10s226 Jun 30th, 2004 05:41 PM

SeaUrchin. Thank you so much for your input. Since I have never been to Positano, I want to get a pretty good idea of what I am in for. Tiffany is an amazing woman and I only want the best for her. I will probably just wait til the mood is right, but I still like to have some idea of what I am in for. Any other recommendations?

SeaUrchin Jun 30th, 2004 10:15 PM

Oh, Ed, you give me hope!

Where are you staying in Positano? Maybe the day before the proposal you can scope out the surroundings and pick a place and by that time Tiffany may have exclaimed joy over a certain place and that would give it more meaning at the moment.

The restaurant Adam and Eve looks nice and I have heard the food is good, but I haven't been there. It looks romantic late at night when I have driven by.
Maybe you can check it out while you are there.

Will you have your own transportation? If not, I suggest you arrange your proposal night in Positano because the busses stop early and taxis cost alot.
