MORE DETAILS IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO DRIVE
Adding to my privious message: The rail line from Rome goes thru Pompeii then to Naples & Sorrento the trip takes 2hrs 55min..from Sorrento it is a short taxi to Positano. The Hotel Villa Franca has stunning views with a rooftop pool and is in walking distance to everything in town. It is a short walk to the bus that goes to Ravello. You can then taxi back to Sorrento one day for the trip to Pompeii and Get the hydrofoil to Capri on another day (about $20 per person). Also note: HERCULANEUM is not as crowded as Pompeii and you can get to it via same rail about 2 stops after Pompeii--it was the seaside resort town of the rich and well worth the visit.

We are planning a trip to the Amalfi coast in May. Do we need to made reservations in advance for hotels in the area? Rooms and views are important to us. Also is there any way to drive around the area or to get to one town from another (ex. Positano to Salerno or Positano to Sorrento)without driving the coast road?

Ann, I definitely recommend reserving ahead, especially if your trip coincides with any European holidays. We're going in June, only after trying to go over holidays in April and May and finding no rooms available at several hotels.
I've never been there, but I believe there are buses between all the towns that I assume go along the coastal roads. I think there are also boats between some towns.
