Positano as home base for 4 days

Hello all,
My husband and I will be staying in Positano for four days in October . we are interested in exploring the area as much as possible in those four days and the only - 'must do' I have in my List is to visit Capri . Am I ok in not planning out each day and just going with the flow when we are there . I take it - we have many options as far as getting around and can plan according to the weather . Should I be looking into planning each day in detail ???

Hi NE.

Agree with you in somewhat "going with the flow" each day.

Anyway I will think in terms of going to a different town each day, that is one day Positano, one day Capri, one day Amalfi and Ravello.

Being october, you can go any place via SITA buses, and I suggest you the timetable for ferries fron Positano to Capri.

Enjoy!

I think it is a great idea to not plan your time in Positano too much. I visit Positano each year and part of the charm of the Amalfi Coast is just relaxing and enjoying the scenery.

www.travelmar.it for ferry schedules to the other villages on the AC. www.capri.net for ferry schedules to Capri.

Another point in favor of being flexible and not locked into an itinerary is that ferries can get cancelled due to sea conditions. 2 years ago I was in Pos the first week of October and the day I planned to go to Capri the weather was sunny but the ferries were cancelled to due a rough sea. So I spent the day enjoying a book on the beach!

I go with the middle ground on this. Plan each day with the idea that the plan isn't iron clad. If you decide, for whatever reason, to deviate, go ahead. But what's the harm in having a plan?

"Many" seems like a bit of a stretch. Am assuming you won't have a car.

As for transportation, ferries are the best option, as even in October the SITA buses are terribly crowded - even more so when the ferries are cancelled.

You could also look into taking the Coast to Coast bus between Positano and Amalfi. At least on the Coast to Coast you are guaranteed a seat.

enjoy easy hiking?

I had a great hike from Amalfi town up to Ravello, perched high above the sea and known for its sweeping views over the water.

The footpath went first thru a lush valley with orchards and then gently up until there were a bunch of steps!

Looked around Ravello, which seemed so sleepy compared to Amalfi and Positano - then took a different route back down to the coast -going on zigzagging lanes thru vineyards -with locals tending the vines-to the coast.

One of my best European walks/hikes ever!

Thanks everyone . EKC - thanks for the ferry schedule links . PalenQ -the hike you described sounds fabulous - I am guessing I can probably just get some maps while we are there to chart out some spectacular hikes . Sounds like fun - I hope to get some fabulous photos .

There are fabulous photo ops all over Positano. At least once per trip I take the bus up to the top of town and wander the back alleys and stairways to take in the views. This trip I am going to walk (WAY) up to the cemetery to catch the views from up there!
