JD,
If you are planning on staying at some of the Pousadas, you may have a "problem" with room availability on the "weekends" without benefit of advance reservations.
Also, some of the pousadas are more popular than others, and book up early mid-week (even in the month of October.)
On one trip to Portugal in late November, two of my Pousada choices did not have room availability. (That was with a one month advance reservation request.)
Look at the Pousada choices and compare them to your planned itinerary. If there are "one or two" that you have your "heart set on", I would make advance reservations or you may risk the possibility of not getting a room.
In addition to the pousadas, many quintas offer very special accommodations.

He probably meant this one: http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...p;tid=34524795
Find the thread you want to reference (use the search function, say, looking for "pousada", then right-click on the message header, say "copy shortcut," and paste it into the message box. I usually remove the "search" that follows the actual thread number (tid=xxxxxxxx).
