Portugal north itinerary question

So we have a bit of an ackward itinerary for Portugal in July 2011. We are spending 5 days in Lisbon (July 19-24) to start and will make some day trips to close areas such as Sintra during this time.
But we want to take July 24-25th and go north to Aveiro before doing a quick switchback south to Algarve.
Is this totally unrealistic?
We thought the following:

Lisbon 24th- leave and travel north to ? Alveiro (is that too much for one day)
Leave Alveiro and head south to Algarve (what route and stopover best to make for this journey?)
We want to see as much of Portugal as possible without being really rushed or stupid about it.
We have July 26-July 31 to explore Southern Portugal and plan to spend July 31-Aug 1 in Evora before returning to Lisbon for departure home.
Thanks for any thoughts anyone has about this plan.

It's only two hours from Lisbon to Aveiro on the train, but five and a half to six from Aveiro to Faro. How about Coimbra instead?

This would be far too much driving for me. Have you thought about flying into Faro, then spending all of the time working your way north and departing out of Porto or vice versa?

Thanks for the advice. I am from Canada so driving long distances is a way of life!
We have actually modified the itinerary to stay first night in Coimbra, second night in Porto and then we will backtrack to Algarve through Evora.

Have you driven in Europe before? I rather doubt that driving in Canada extrapolates well to driving in Europe.

Thanks. I don't suspect the driving experience will be at all the same. I was just trying to convey that a 4-5 drive is not significant to me in terms of time behind the wheel.
