Portugal in June: 3-week itinerary. Does this make sense?
We are 62 and 74 years old, planning our first trip to Portugal after many visits to Asia. We have learned to slow things down, enjoy more time in a place vs. trying to cram too many places into one trip. Does this sound reasonable for a June trip? Still figuring out what to do in each place but want to know if the number of days in each place seems right. We will pick up a rental car before leaving Lisbon.
Lisbon - 4 nights - found a great Airbnb with terrace overlooking city in Principe Real neighborhood Evora - 5 nights - staying at Albergaria do Calvario Hotels in Evora - Alentejo - Portugal | ADC Évora - Albergaria do Calvário Fill time with day trips and relaxation. This is longer than most recommend but we have a personal connection to the area. Marvao - 1 night - heard this was a nice spot. While only short drive from Evora, it could be a good place to stay before heading to Douro. OR, should we skip and keep driving??? Douro Valley - 3 nights - Where in the valley do you recommend? Places to stay? Visit wineries, relax. We want to take N222 to Porto because we've read it is a beautiful drive. Porto - 5 nights with day trips to Guimaraes, maybe Braga. Cascais - 4 nights to relax before heading back to USA. Stop at Batalha and Alcobaca on the way south from Porto. Close enough via train to Lisbon to do anything we missed on the front end of the trip. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you! |
Distances are not that great that you need to spend a night in Marvăo, although it has a nice pousada. We stayed in Foz de Côa in the upper Douro valley to see the pre-historic carvings. You can find my trip report by searching "Michael Portugal".

Looks terrific! Obidos is a great stop too between Lisbon and Porto - nice overnight.

We loved staying at the same place in Evora! Once you get through the very narrow city walls and through the hotel gate, they’ll park your car for you in their underground garage and have it waiting for you whenever you need it. Great breakfast and very friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommend! |
We loved Albergaria do Calvario in Évora!
In the Douro Valley you could stay in a winehouse hotel, such as Quinta da Pacheca in Lamego, or Quinta do Vallado in Peso da Régua. The N222 is a beautiful drive indeed. |
I recommend going to Sintra. You could either go as a day trip, or spend 1 or 2 nights in Sintra. We stayed 5 nights in Lisbon, and this included a day trip to Sintra. So I think 4 nights is good for just Lisbon. You could also visit Sintra from Cascais.
