Portugal
We will have already had 4 days in Lisbon ( Belem and Sintra) and 2 days in Evora. We fly out of Madrid because of auto costs to drop in Portugal since we will have picked up a car in Spain. So this is the last leg of our 5+ week trip. Please give thoughts.
Day 1- leave Lisbon early and go to Obidos then to Nazare and then to Batahla (overnite) Day 2 visit monastery if we were not able to see it when we arrived at Batahla and then drive to Marvao Day 3 & 4 spend time in Marvao and then drive to Salamanca for 2 nights Day 5 drive to Madrid for a 2:15 flight. How long will it take to drive from Salamanca to Madrid?About how long will we need to visit the monastery and Batahla, What should we do/see in Nazare. Any other thoughts??? |
We were in Marvao in Jan and while it is really special place, I dont think there is enough IN Marvao to warrant 2 days. 1 night would be enough, giving you a late afternoon/evening and morning there. I would add the extra time in to either Batahla and visit the monastery in Tomar or to Madrid to give you a cushion for your flight.

Have a meal in Nazaré. We passed through there in a recent trip (Oct '10) to Portugal, and had a phenomenal lunch at a place called Ala Riba. I originally wanted to eat at A Tasquinha, based on recommendations here and on other sites, but it was closed (not permanently, just the day we were there). Ala Riba was adjacent and looked promising so we gave it a try. It was a HUGE meal and very inexpensive. One of the best we had while in Portugal. We also took the Ascensor de Nazaré up the cliff to take in the stunning views.
I found Nazaré charming. Granted, we were there in the off season, so it was quite peaceful. I'm sure that's not the case in the heat of the summer, but still worth seeing in any case. |
While you're in Marvao go to Castello de Vide - 15 minutes away. There's much more to see in CdV. Get there early in the morning to find parking. Marvao is worth a couple of hours at most and you can walk around CdV in half a day. I loved watching the sun set in Marvao. With all those white buildings and narrow streets the twilight seemed to last a very long time.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. We will arrive in Marvao in the early evening and spend one nite. Then we could spend some time in the morning and then drive to Salamance for 2 nites.
