Portovenere to Portofino

My husband is very upset. Because of what happened with the Concordia, the Italian government has diverted our ship from Portofino (to perform tests in the water depth) to Portovenere for the day in September. He desperately wants to see Portofino. It sounds like to get out of Portovenere you have to either take the public bus, taxi or ferry to La Spezia to get to Santa Margarita by car or train. From what I can gather all of the ferry's make multiple stops. Someone else mentioned that it is difficult to get there by car because of the road being wiped out by the floods of last year???? Is this true?

I am having difficulty finding info for a private car and driver in Portovenere. Any suggestions? I can't even seem to find a tourist office email address for Portovenere.

After we get off the ship in Rome we are picking up a car and driving to Montepulciano for 2 nights, Florence for 1 night and then on to Parma for one night before heading to Milan to pick up our flight. It appears that Portofino is pretty far north to try and include this in our itinerary.

We went to Portovenere from Monterroso by boat. Perhaps you could get a train to Santa Margherita Ligure and then get another small ferry to Portofino from SML.
I prefer Portovenere to Portofino myself.

Hi CC - For a private transfer the Porto Venere Tourist Office should be able to provide you with taxi info. I suggest you contact them at:

[email protected]

A trip to Portofino will be time-consuming, however. Personally I'd spend the day in Portovenere. JMPO ...

I agree- you lucked out- Portovenere is a much nicer place to spend a day.

You did not ask, but I'll add- I suggest skipping the night in Florence and add it to either Montepulciano or Parma. Take a look at travel times and then calculate the amount of actual time you will have to enjoy these stops (not much). Visit Florence on another trip when you have the time to really explore and experience the city.

Thank you so much for all your advice everyone. It has been 20 years since I have been to Portofino so I am guessing it has gotten REALLY touristy by all your responses.

Touristy and expensive, but Portovenere has always been a better destination, just not as hyped by the jet setters.
