The Rants and Raves section has a very so-so review from both Fodors and a guest. Although, both state that Portofino is expensive and the Eden is reasonable for there.

I would look into staying in santa margherita instead of Portofino (which gets boring after a day) Check out hotel continental in santa margherita. I liked the idea of Portofino better than the town itself.

Nellie, I returned from Santa Margharita last week. Our hotel was the Hotel Laurin. We did visit Portofino twice, once by boat during the day and by bus at night. During the day it was lovely, lots of day trippers and at night very quiet. We went in the evening after dinner, I had seen pictures of Portofino at night and it looked charming. It was Ok but very quiet except for those dining in restaurants and those on their boats. I inquired at a restaurant about having dessert and coffee and were told "We are a restaurant, we only except diners". Portofino is very small, very $$$, I much preferred Santa Margharita. I agree with Dawn, I think I liked the idea of Portofino better than the real thing.

I also would recommend Hotel Continental in Santa Margherita. I thought Portofino was fun to see for about 1 hour. Our room overlooking the water made us feel like "The Rich and Famous" even though it was only $150. <BR>Have Fun!

We stayed at the Eden, and had a nice large room and bath. The garden was very pleasant and we enjoyed meeting people there both at breakfast and in the early evening. While the room was in no way glamorous -- maybe called "early Goodwill" decor, it was fine and a real bargain for Portofino. It was spotlessly clean and well maintained. Enjoyed walking around to the lighthouse and also took a nice boat trip to another cove. A day in Portofino is plenty though, as far as I'm concerned.
