Portobello Road
 

I have been to the Portobello Rd. market on a Saturday and was wondering if it is worth going to on Friday? I've read conflicting reports on whether anything is going on every Friday.

My understanding is that early Sat. am is the time to go; I asssumed that it is not even open on Fridays. I was there mid-morning on a Sat. in the rain, and it was quite crowded.

It all depends on what you mean by Portobello road. The big tourist visited event is sat morning starting around 7. during the week some of the shops and a few of the galleries and arcades are open at various hours. The clothes and bric a brac section at the far end are open on Fridays and also sundays in addition to sat. But I think what you will really want to see happens only on saturdays.

Thanks for the info. I think I will bypass Portabello Rd. and head over to Little Venice and take a canal boat tour to Camden Lock market. I was just curious to know if Portabello Rd. was worth visiting on a day other than Saturday.

Sorry just want to be clear... if I am looking for non-high end regular/ vinatge clothing & small jewelry type, would it be worth it to go on a Friday? What would be available on Saturday that is not on other days? Thank you for your help!

If you can't make it to the Portobello market EARLY, is it worth trying to get there later in the day?

Leah: the main problem with getting to Portabello Rd mid-morning is that it gets unbelievably crowded. You can't walk around easily and it is hard to see much.

What is the Portobello Road Market like on a Sunday?

Dead, dead, dead on Sunday as far as shopping goes. Stalls are closed, street is quiet. However, there are a few nice pubs and places in the area to have breakfast--and it's really quiet!:)

okay - last question on this one. We arrive in London on Saturday morning - fairly early, but probably won't be able to make it to the market until after noon. We're going to go for it regardless, but what will we encounter in terms of crowds?

I'm usually a positive note on this board, so I hate to do this but, by noon things are clearing out. If you are staying nearby and only have a short commute, however, I'd say give it a try.

Leah - it just won't be worth it. The time to go to Portabello is early AM. All the stalls are pretty much folded up and gone by 12:30. So save the aggravation of rushing there to find nothing but messy post-market streets.<BR><BR>take it easy - pick up a copy of Time out at the airport and look for antiques fairs, markets, etc. There are market-types things going on most days somewhere in London. So find another one and skip Port. Rd this time.

There is a little book of London Markets available at the information desk in the Underground stations. I went to Portobello Rd. late morning, and it was still packed and going strong. There are alot of stores that sell the type of thing you are describing on the street on the way to the market. I would think that there hours would be longer. I hope the market guide helps you.
