Portabello Road

Hi! Leaving tomorrow for London, OMG! I would like to ask if most people think Portabello Road is worthwhile going to on weekdays, as I won't be there on the weekend. Thanks for any insight. So far as I can tell, all the activity is on Saturday, but do they still have neat shops and things open on weekdays?

I wouldn't waste my time going on a week-day. The fun of Portabello and the finds are on saturdays. The large market ,many dealer , places are closed. some of these dealers come from all over england just for the week-ends. A few sigle dealer permanent shops are open but not many.

try Camdem Passage on wednesdays for a street market atmosphere and loads of dealers. Alfie's and Gray's are fun and open all week. Antiquarius on King's Rd is also open but a little more up-market price wise.

Go on the weekday. It still will be a memorable visit to be in Nottinghill.

Thanks, Jody and Thomas! I think I will go, even if it's brief, and I appreciate the other recommendations, too! Into my notebook they go!

Harrie, if you'll be there on Friday morning, why not try the Bermondsey Market near Tower Bridge Road? I hear it's what Portabello Road used to be like (but I've yet to go).

I agree about going to Portabello anyway, but do go in the morning, whatever day you go as they tend to close earlier (4pm?) than regular shops.

Go anyway! It may not have the buzz of Saturday but if you like looking at antiques, old Jewellery or unusual items it is great fun and you will always see something worthwhile.

Portobello Road is as open and fabulous on a Friday as a Saturday, with a difference. Friday is clothes day, and bric a brac - not so much antiques. It's easily my favourite day and I hardly ever miss it - a few days ago I got some fantastic rare LPs under the flyover. Fridays are the days you see fashion students and designers looking for inspiration, new designers selling their original creations, and it's a lot more chilled than on a Saturday.

Mid-week, the market is closed, but the area is lovely. Look on web sites for guides to Ledbury Road and the area.
