There was a post on this a while back (in fact, that was the first question I was looking to have answered when I found the forum several months ago as I am taking a cruise from there in September). Check this out or do a search for Civitavecchia and it should pop up.
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34855328 Basically, I would stay in Rome and enjoy whatever time you have there. Don't waste your money on a taxi or shuttle through the cruiseline. Take the train from Termini to the port (cost is probably under 10 euros and it will take about an hour). From the train station it is a short walk to the port where the cruiseline will probably have a shuttle to the ship. Here is a site with info on Civitevecchia. You can get train time tables there (from there to Termini in Rome, so just reverse the times and you have a general idea of departure times from Rome). http://www.civitavecchia.com/uk/index.html# Hope this helps. |
If you have a LOT of luggage consider taking a taxi from the RR station directly to your ship unless you are certain there will be shuttle service from the port entrance to where the ship is actually docked.

We end our cruise in Civitavecchia, and have a flight home at 13:50 out of FCO. It seems like transfers are very expensive into Rome from the port and we have always taken the train into the Termini when we have spent a day there as part of the cruise. Does a train go to the airport (FCO)? How much time do we need if we took the train into Rome and then caughta taxi to FCO? Is that a dumb idea? BTW, We have been to Civitavecchia 2X's and think it looks like a nice sea side place to spend some time.

I'm also taking a cruise from civitavecchia (end of june) and staying one night in Rome before the cruise leaves...we're staying at the Anglo Americano...I also don't know the best way to get from downtown Rome to the port, we are traveling with a group of 13 and will not pay the cruise line $80 one way per person...but can we take our 12 days worth of luggage on the train with us?

You can certainly take your luggage on the train.

Hi Z,
>We end our cruise in Civitavecchia, and have a flight home at 13:50 out of FCO.< On the same day???????!!!!!! Train schedules are at www.trenitalia.com Since you will be at Rome TE, you might as well take the Leonardo da Vinci Express to Aeroporto Fiumicino. ((I)) |
Thanks Ira, Is Rome's TE the Termini? If it is, I guess you did answer 1 of my concerns. We can take a shuttle from the tarin station to the airport. Is it a bus or van or what? Thanks agin for your help. Any other hints?

Zwho,
Yes, we know those transfers can be "expensive" but since this is not a case of your staying an extra day in the area but rather leaving on the same day that "expense" might just be worth it IF that transfer goes directly to the airport but to each their own. |
Dukey, Your are so right. We do need to be at the airport THAT same day for our flight home. Its just that I have noticed with our 1st Med Cruise and every one after that, that wherever we went, it cost us about $10.00 to the ship's $100.00 charge to get most places. Getting the train to Rome from Civitavecchia was no big deal, as soon as I found out where and how to get to the station. Since, I already know this to be the case (for us anyway) I'm just trying to find out if we can get to the Rome Airport (FCO) from Civitavecchia in time to make our plane, but do it on our own, since I know if it's possible, we are capable of doing it and don't mind dealing with the luggage. And the expense of the transfer may well be worth it, if getting there by our own means becomes too complicated and full of hassles. Thats why I asked here, to weigh my options. I'm cheap, but not stupid!
